When God seems far away, remembering His presences is sometimes as easy as looking outside at the moon as it waxes and wanes, shares Bronlynn
“My salvation shall be forever, my righteousness shall not wane” (Isaiah 51:6b NASB).
During the summer I love to sit outside in the evenings and listen to the sights and sounds of nature. I haven’t been able to do that much this summer because it has either been too hot or I’ve been too tired. But one night a few weeks ago the moon was bigger and more beautiful than I have ever seen it.
When I read this verse in Isaiah I remembered that moon. The moon waxes and wanes in earth’s sight depending upon its astronomical position, but it is always there. I thought about my view of God. There are times when I am struggling with a pain or problem and God shines forth in hugeness and greatness like that glorious moon I saw. There are other times when His presence seems to wane and He is not as visible to me.
But He is there, just as the moon is there. God’s salvation–His saving power in my life to bring me through any and everything–does not wane. I may not see it clearly all the time. He may be hidden by clouds or my position may be such that He is not visible for a time, but He is always there.
In eternity God’s presence will be revealed completely–more beautiful and bright than the most spectacular moon here on earth. Until then I treasure the moments when He shines in huge and visible ways to me here. When His presence seems to wane, I know it is only a passing cloud or my position that is blocking my sight of Him.
Afterward I will appreciate the light and beauty of His presence even more, and hopefully will have grown in the assurance of that presence even during the waning moments of my life.
Prayer: Give me faith to believe You are there when the clouds and darkness of life seem to hide You. Thank you that Your presence is constant and unchanging, even when my perception of You may wane. Amen.

Have you had times recently when God’s presence has either been more or less visible to you? What do you do during the waning times to remind yourself that He is still there?
If you would like an up close look at just how the moon waxes and wanes you may enjoy this video. Designed by NASA, this animated movie will show you the “geocentric phase, libration, position angle of the axis, and apparent diameter of the moon throughout the year 2011, at hourly intervals.” (It really is kind of cool, and a good reminder of how much God loves details!)

Bronlynn, thanks for the wonderful reminder. God’s creation always lifts my spirits & delights my soul too.
Here in Australia it’s the opposite problem, as we are on the end of winter! I have sooooo missed being in the midst of God’s creation & being a “shut in” doesn’t help. So when the sun creeps out, like today, & the body allows time out in God’s creation, viewing His glory & majesty, every second of it is a joy!
It’s amazing how much more I value the simple moments within His wondrous creation. Lotsoluv Kerryn
Kerryn,
As you prepare for summer, we are preparing for winter. .. not a particularly happy thought for me, although at least we still have fall in between
. I hope and pray you get some great times out in creation as your weather warms up! I know how enjoyable it is.
Blessings,
Bronlynn
Bronlynn: As a general rule, I feel closest to God when I’m out in the midst of His amazing creation.
Where I live, it’s been feeling like fall for a week or so already. I’m always a little sad when this happens, but He has reminded me of His promise to continue with the changing of the seasons. Just as He keeps this promise, He will bring all others to pass as well. This gives me comfort.
For now, by His grace, I will live one day at a time, enjoying its blessings (in nature and in other ways) and when a day is especially tough, I will, like you, ask for the faith to trust in His constant presence with me.
I’m hoping the waxing and waning of the moon will remind me of this absolutely wonderful truth.
Thanks Bronlynn. (I’m hoping to send you an e-mail soon.)
Thanks Beth. Fall makes me sad too in a way, although I do enjoy the weather and the colors. But we know what lies ahead. . . It’s interesting that the day this devotional posted, August 31, we had a full moon and it was the second one of the month. I was able to sit in moonlight even in my bedroom and I was reminded of part of the Psalm that says the skies declare His handiwork. How true, day and night!
Blessings.

Bronlynn: How lovely of the Lord to give you the blessing of being able to bask In the light of a full moon when this devotional was posted. By the way, I saw the same moon here too. Something to make us feel closer to one another. And so your reply to my comments has brought me another little gift from above.
Gracios!
