I remember a news story from last year about an Australian woman, Vicki, who had raised a crocodile for 13 years and allowed it the run of the house. Her husband finally said she had to choose between the marriage and her pet crocodile. She filed for divorce.
It is easy for us to quietly call her crazy, but how often do our priorities gradually grow out of place? Simple choices that seem logical can eventually become full-grown crocodiles that are biting the feet of our loved ones or even driving them away.
Our priorities are to be in the order of God, family, and then ministry. Ministry comes in many forms from being a speaker at your women’s bible study group to delivery meals to those who are ill. Vicki said “Husbands can look after themselves, but my crocodile can’t make his meals. As soon as I started looking after Johnie [the croc], Greg and I started having problems. We did nothing but fight.”
Deuteronomy 5:8 says, “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.” Crocodiles can come in many forms.
I am learning to regularly re-evaluate where my crocodile hide. Is my ministry consistently taking away from my family? Are my efforts to keep my child happy taking away from my time at the Lord’s feet? Are things in the right order?
Wisdom is learning to know when to pick up the phone versus when to cuddle beside your spouse. Wisdom is knowing when to get a babysitter so you can attend a ministry event and when to take your child along. It all takes a daily relationship with God to know how to make the choices.
Prayer: Lord, help me to recognize those hidden crocodiles for what they are. Sometimes it’s so hard to see that we can idolize things in our life above you, when they are still good things. Give me the wisdom to know what crocodiles really look like.
