When you live with constant pain or illness, it can be hard to feel satisfied with what each day brings. Isn’t it easier to look back to the way things were before, whether that be last month, or maybe many years ago? The past can seem to be so much brighter than what our present, or even our future might look like.
But there are also cases where the past may have hurts and memories that are not so happy for us. Maybe we have been hurt by something, or someone; or maybe it’s just painful to remember things we used to do and now are not capable of anymore.
God told Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the Promised Land and as they went, they were to remember the promise He gave to Joshua, that He would be with them wherever they went. They were also to go in without fear or discouragement and be strong and courageous. After many years of wandering in the desert, they were to go forward and live into the promise that God had given to Abraham so long before.
Just as God promised the people of Israel that He would be with them, so that promise is for us too. Every day of our present and future, God has promised to be with us and that should give us cause not to be discouraged, or terrified.
I know that even though I’m aware of the promise, the struggle I face some days, makes it hard to feel that I’m living a life with strength and courage; and my future often seems overwhelming. But God’s word is full of so many promises for me and I want to strive each day, to live into those promises and have my focus on the present, not the past or the future.
Prayer: Father God, help me to live into the promises You have given in Your word – to remember that You give me courage and take away my fears. Amen.
