“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” (1 Peter 4:12,16)
In the midst of a period where life seemed to have got on top of me and my depression seemed so much worse, I came across this quote that I had jotted down when I heard it some time ago.
“Lord, don’t let me remain where I am. Help me reach where You want me to be.”
“Where I am” was currently: depressed, unmotivated, scared, and feeling pretty useless. But was that anywhere near where God wanted me to be? I don’t think so.
When life seems too hard, or just so overwhelming that you would love there to be a way out, we need to remember that God has a plan for where He wants us to be.
There was a well known politician in Australia some years ago who is quoted as saying “Life wasn’t meant to be easy.” Whether or not he did say that, or even if it is true, the Bible doesn’t promise us that life as a Christian will have no difficult times, in fact it really tells us the opposite–as Peter tells us in the above verses.
So God knows that we will face trials and that there will be times when we think it would be easier to give up, rather than go on. But He still knows where He wants us to end up and sometimes that means we need to go through periods like I have been lately.
I hope that as the quote says, the Lord will not let me remain there, but continue to help me become all that He wants me to be and I choose to believe that those dark times, will help me to grow stronger as I work towards where He wants me to ultimately be.
Prayer: Father God, help me to “hang on” and let You guide me to where You want me to be. Help me to remember when things are tough that “this too shall pass.” Amen.
