Are you feeling overwhelmed by your circumstances? Do the problems seem to stack up? Fiona Burrows shares why we can rest in the fact that God is never overwhelmed.
“Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them–the Lord, who remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:5-6)
Have you ever had a time when it seems like everywhere you go, or every time you talk with someone, there seems to be stuff happening that’s hard? Have you had times when all you seem to hear is bad news?
Life can be like that sometimes. It may seem like this will last forever–like you won’t hear any good news again.
Over the last few weeks I’ve heard so many really hard things about what people I care about are going through. I really felt for them. It can seem overwhelming as we share, care, pray, or try to support our friends in what they are facing.
We may be overwhelmed, but God is not and never is, overwhelmed. God is not overwhelmed by how many prayers (maybe exactly the same prayers) are said on someone’s behalf. He’s not surprised by all the suffering and sadness in the world, because He knows all about it.
I took comfort as I read the above verses from Psalm 146 and was reminded of how big our God is.
He is our help–when we feel overwhelmed by circumstances.
He is our hope–when we feel like everything is falling apart around us.
He remains faithful forever–when we feel lost or alone in our suffering.
“Blessed is He” it says–that is sometimes translated as “happy is he.” Can we be happy in the midst of difficult circumstances? It’s not always easy–but we can keep on trusting in the God who is our help and our hope and who promises to remain faithful forever. In fact, I don’t know any other way that we can face those difficult times.
Someone reminded me recently that when facing a fear or anxiety, we should “put on the full armor and let God fight for, and with us.” (from Ephesians 6)
We are so blessed to have God on our side, no matter what we face.
Prayer: Thank You Father that we can bring all our worries and concerns to You and that nothing overwhelms You. Help us to keep trusting in Your faithfulness to see us through whatever lies ahead. Amen.
