Why do we need to make an effort to keep joy alive in our life? Karlton explains.
“The Ephraimites will become like warriors, and their hearts will be glad as with wine. Their children will see it and be joyful; their hearts will rejoice in the Lord.” (Zechariah 10:7)
As children, we found joy so easily and had a sense of wonder at many things. From a colorful butterfly and delicately shaped flowers, to majestic trees and the stars above–we had a healthy sense of wonder and an active feeling of joy in our hearts.
But getting older and feeling the weight of pain and suffering, the cares of life can shape and rob us of our childlike hearts and the joy that was such a part of our lives. Jesus knew the importance of keeping that childlike heart alive and beating strong within us.
“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:17)
Our Lord understood that life can make us cynical. Harsh experiences that come with age can harden our hearts and make it difficult to believe. Faith comes easier to a child and so does wonder and joy.
Our suffering can make us tender-hearted–or it can form a cynical crust that robs us of faith, joy, and wonder when we need it most. I tell you that it may not be easy to reawaken the child inside of you. You may have it buried deep beneath a layer of pain and grief, yet you will need the wonder and the joy and the hope and the faith that child within can bring to you in your time of affliction.
Fellow sufferer, reawaken the childlike heart inside of you, find those things that brought wonder and joy to your soul! Call upon the Lord to renew your faith and hope, to bring the child inside you back to life once more.
Prayer: Dear Lord, where is the childlike heart we once had? Help us to find it again. Amen.

I usually share music in this spot, but since we were talking about the faith of a child, I thought this video of a child calling into a radio station may touch your heart. -Lisa
