If you are seeking solace the world doesn’t seem to provide, Shelly shares how a new outlook on Autumn may be where you find true rest.
“Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep” (1 Kings 19:3-5).
Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. I love the crunching leaves and the cooler temps. The air seems to have the scent of brisk. It’s so refreshing. I love the colors and the flannel and the bonfires.
Lately I’ve come to love autumn for an entirely different reason.
Maybe it’s because I can get out less, or maybe it’s because I have such a hard time getting any real sleep. For whatever reason, I am recognizing fall as an engraved invitation from the King of Kings, meant for all creation.
It’s an invitation to rest.
I see the layer of leaves as a comforting blankets that muffles footfalls and brings a hush to the forest. I recognize the brisk wind as the signal to hunker down and bundle up. The colors beckon my eyes to relax.
The natural world is gathering and storing away. The animals are preparing their dens for a long season of slumber. The skies are gathering clouds to soften the sun. Even the trees are shedding their foliage in order to silently withstand winter’s coming bite.
Autumn . . . this autumn . . . is calling me to rest.
In the scripture passage above, we see our Lord’s tender care of His faithful servant. God does not admonish Elijah for his weariness. Rather, He grants Him respite. He feeds Him and keeps watch over Him. Later He gives Elijah the honor of speaking directly with Him.
Do you hear this invitation to rest? Will you answer? Give yourself some grace today. Lay it down for a while. It’s okay.
Prayer: Holy Lord, thank You for the beautiful invitation You have given in the season of Autumn. We are coming, Lord. Prepare our rest. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What can you lay down this autumn, leaving it with the King of Kings while you rest?
This is the song “I Will Rest in You” with Jaci Velasquez. Shelly thought it would touch you as the lyrics remind you to seek Him . . . and find true rest. Absolutely beautiful! -Lisa
