Do you let other suffer with you? Do you send a message to people that you would like their presence or do you send unspoken signs to back off?

Do you suffer with those who suffer or do you back off and say "I'll pray for you"? Pastor Chris explains. "Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15) God so often sends people into our lives at just the right time. Sometimes it’s just the right time for you. Sometimes it’s just the right time for them. Most often, it’s just the right time for you both. God’s heart is for community, for sharing life together. The reason God gave us one another is to intertwine our lives together in a way symbolic of the way He intertwines His life with ours. God is like a grand baker, He is always mixing ingredients. He mixed together His creation of Adam and Eve in the creative act of marriage and … [Read more...]

How Can We Model Christ As a Servant When We are Hurting?

CAN WE MODEL CHRIST AND BE A SERVANT WHEN WE ARE IN A LOT OF PAIN? Yes, even when we are hurting or in physical pain, we can still serve others, because we have Christ as an example who was still serving right up until He left this earth.

This Easter, as you consider how you can be serve others and have a servant heart, Julie reminds us Christ did it even though He was in deep pain. "He went away a second time and prayed, “My father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” (Matthew 26: 42) This year when thinking of the last days of Christ on this earth I thought about one of His last acts as a servant (King). He washed His disciples’ feet. He washed their feet all the while knowing that He would be going to face His most tormenting time on this earth. Jesus had warned His disciples about what was to come and He had explained to them many times what was going to happen; yet it seemed they were oblivious to … [Read more...]

Faith? Why Do People Think it is Complicated?

Anna and her mom

"Trusting God? It is complicated!" we may think. But Vicki reminds us that God made is simple enough so that a child--or a young woman with different-abilities--could understand it--perfectly! “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life (Psalm 143:8).” “What do you do?” Seems like an easy enough question to answer. Not so, for people whose disability robbed them of their profession. Except for Anna, a young lady, who has Down syndrome. The students in my Foundations of Special Education course were learning about intellectual disabilities. I invited Anna to visit our class. My college students compiled a list of questions … [Read more...]

The Hardship That Makes Us Thrive

CAN BEING IN PAIN OR GROWING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME help you in the long run? It's not something we really want to talk about, but hardships do make a stronger and more compassionate individuals. #devotional #chronic illness

Can pain and hardship really help us thrive in life? Yes. . . Karlton shares. . . "Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes--the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. (Nehemiah 9:31-33) There are people who work very hard to become rich so that their children will not have to work hard, or suffer, or have to endure difficulty. Yet I have wondered if this is wise. If one never has to strive, to face hardship and difficulty, can they ever truly grow and mature? It is hard to look at suffering as a … [Read more...]

Because you are ill, even more daily giving may be required of you--because it is when we depend solely on Jesus for our strength He shines the most. This #devotional is a nice reminder of why we need to continue to set our heart aside for God with an awesome video at the end

Do you ever think you may be exempt from daily giving since you are ill? Don't let your circumstances determine how much you think that God will use you. Dorothea explains... “Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the Lord?” (1 Chronicles 29:5) King David’s simple question captures my attention in this passage. It also becomes a challenge to me, making me stop and really think about my approach to daily living. After David commands Solomon, who will become Israel’s next king, to be courageous and build the temple of God (I Chronicles 28), David goes on to list his contributions to God’s temple. Then, he poses the question about consecration. He asks about a personal commitment to attach themselves to God. I … [Read more...]

God Can Use Our Suffering If We Let Him

OUR SUFFERING DOES MATTER, BUT TO WHO? Sometimes it seems like the whole world wants to AVOID hearing about our pain or even acknowledging our disease. But this #devotional writer explains that there is a purpose in our suffering, and eventually (maybe not today) you will find it.

Our suffering can seem to have no purpose at times, but knowing God is faithful is enough for us to hold on to during the rough times. Pastor Charles explains. "I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them." (Isaiah 42:16) I remember early in my suffering with back problems of how I questioned God and wondered why I was going through these situations. I thought of so many others who were doing much worse with their lives and it seemed as if their lives were a bed of roses. I kept on trying to tell God that I did not deserve this. I even went to the … [Read more...]

Feeling like your life is being chipped away? Rev. Chris shares how God is using your pain as one of the tools to mold you into His masterpiece. "I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (Philippians 3:10-12) When I was a boy, I often worked with my dad and grandfather in the woodworking business they owned jointly.
