The Hardship That Makes Us Thrive

CAN BEING IN PAIN OR GROWING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME help you in the long run? It's not something we really want to talk about, but hardships do make a stronger and more compassionate individuals. #devotional #chronic illness

Can pain and hardship really help us thrive in life? Yes. . . Karlton shares. . . "Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes--the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. (Nehemiah 9:31-33) There are people who work very hard to become rich so that their children will not have to work hard, or suffer, or have to endure difficulty. Yet I have wondered if this is wise. God Can Use Our Suffering If We Let Him

OUR SUFFERING DOES MATTER, BUT TO WHO? Sometimes it seems like the whole world wants to AVOID hearing about our pain or even acknowledging our disease. But this #devotional writer explains that there is a purpose in our suffering, and eventually (maybe not today) you will find it.

Our suffering can seem to have no purpose at times, but knowing God is faithful is enough for us to hold on to during the rough times. Pastor Charles explains. "I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them." (Isaiah 42:16) I remember early in my suffering with back problems of how I questioned God and wondered why I was going through these situations. I thought of so many others who were doing much worse with their lives and it seemed as if their lives were a bed of roses. I kept on trying to tell God that I did not deserve this. I even went to the … [Read more...]

Finish this sentence: My life is all about. . . When symptoms of my disease monopolize my attention, my life feels all about. . . multiple sclerosis (MS). Yuck! Lately, my life has been all about. . . death. That’s because in one week we experienced two deaths. It all started around Christmas. We noticed a cancerous tumor returning in our dog. Almost before our eyes, his abdomen expanded. His days were numbered. We agreed that the moment we knew he was in pain we’d put him down. During those days, my life was all about. . . bracing myself for our … [Read more...]

(2 Corinthians 12:9) The Lord has been bringing this scripture to my heart over and over again. It seems no matter where I turn, He brings it up to me. Up until today I would have done anything--taken any pill, allowed any surgery to happen--just to get my life back to where it used to be. To be able to return to "normal" was my only goal in life. My Plans Versus God’s Plans For My Life of Illness

my-plans

"But I liked my plans!" What happens when God's plans are different than your plans? Christy shares her story. "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" (Hebrews 13:5) For years, I had grand plans for a successful life. I married my husband at the age of 19 and was at a place where I was going to finish up my doctorate in marriage and family therapy and have a private practice helping people. Life was moving right along--personally and professionally--until the day I was told I may have a rare brain disorder. My entire world was yanked out from under me as I tried to process what the doctor had said. I had always heard … [Read more...]

Feeling Dizzy Is An Opportunity to Be Armed With Strength

feeling dizzy

"When we start feeling dizzy, we become anxious, fearful, and weak. Lisa shares how we can change these emotions. Those who stumble are armed with strength." (1 Samuel 2:4) Do you ever start feeling dizzy because of your illness or medication side effects? My feet are quite deformed from a lifetime of hammer toes and twenty years of rheumatoid arthritis. I put all weight on my heels, as I cannot place weight on the balls of my feet. This, in addition to sometimes feeling dizzy, is not a good way to stand on your two feet. My knees also go right out from under me. Some of you have heard one of my favorite attitudes: "I used to be cute to look at. Now I am just fun to watch." As I stand in a line, and attempt to just stay in one place, it … [Read more...]

Life As a Believer: Are You Trying to Play It Safe?

It is easy to play it safe when it comes to our faith, because our illness causes enough upheaval in our lives. But Lisa asks, "What are the consequences?" "'For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to You. You will seek me and find Me when you seek me with all your heart. We Are God’s Work, Yet Unfinished

gods-work

We are each God's work, His masterpiece, but as Karlton reminds us, He is not done with us yet! "Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6) God is not through with us yet. We may be broken, bent, scarred, diseased, weak, and have every sort of human flaw, yet we can be encouraged by the fact that God is not done with us. We may be disappointed in ourselves, we may fail to live up to our own expectations, yet God sees the finished product, He views us in the light of eternity. Life brings us many frustrations and disappointments. There are times that I sigh in frustration over circumstances or events. We long for perfection in many … [Read more...]

how-to-devote-your-life-to-god

"As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been." (1 Kings 11:4) My great grandfather was a preacher, and so is one of my brothers. I never truly wanted to be a preacher. Yet I love the Lord, and His Word, and my hope is that when my life is through they will say of me: "He was devoted to the Lord." The NIV Study Bible describes the Hebrew word "devotion" as meaning the most intimate degree of loyalty, having love and faithfulness between an individual and the Lord. I don't think any greater thing could be said of us regarding our relationship with God. So, how do you devote your life to God when living with … [Read more...]
