Taking From The Lord, His Best For My Blessing

DO YOU EVER WONDER IF YOU REALLY DESERVE GOD'S BLESSING? You do! You are precious to Him! And when you cope with daily pain and illness He understands your weariness, your exhaustion of trying to hold it all together. This #devotional writer shares her thoughts on receiving God's blessings.

Do you ever feel you fall short of deserving God's blessings? Kerryn shares her journey in "the asking" and receiving of God's blessings. “God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot change it” (Numbers 23:19-20). I need you, Lord! “I'm right here with you, My child.” I need you, Lord! “I'm right beside you My precious daughter.” I need you, Lord! “I'm all you need My princess, My heir, My joy.” Sometimes I feel like I'm a little toddler, asking continually for reassurance from my Abba Father. He's sooooooo much more patient than … [Read more...]

Trusting the Hands of the Potter to Transform His Clay

This is a photo Lynn took of Jamie Zach, a talented potter who allowed Lynn to come to his studio and take photos of him at work at his wheel.

Illness can send us spinning in many ways and sometimes we feel like the Potter is just letting us spin, rather than doing any molding. Lynn shares her journey. . . “But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him” (Jeremiah 18:4). A friend told me years ago that she had never known anyone to be, so literally, on the Potter’s wheel as I am. I have lived with vestibular dysfunction--constant dizziness, eruptions of internal spinning vertigo, related bouts with nausea, and a striving to keep my balance, since March of 1983. The cause is unknown though doctors believe a virus hit my right inner ear as evidence of damage is … [Read more...]

What is Prayer Doing In Your Life–Really?

WHAT DO YOU THINK PRAYER IS--REALLY? Is it a fancy wish list of what you need--now? Or a time to surrender your hurts over to the God of the universe and ask for His will to be done. This is an awesome article on what prayer is and can be in your life.

When you think of prayer what comes to mind? Growth in knowing who God is. . . or quiet times of presenting wish lists before God? Pastor Chris shares an excellent devotion on prayer (and don't miss the video!) “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) When you pray, how do you pray? Is the God of the universe your slot machine? Do you put in a token of prayer, pull the handle, and wait while the stars of the heavens spin, hoping that they align “just so” in your favor? In prayer, are we merely hoping for our circumstances to become more favorable or are we asking God to alter us through them? When it comes to prayer, that … [Read more...]

Faith? Why Do People Think it is Complicated?

Anna and her mom

"Trusting God? It is complicated!" we may think. But Vicki reminds us that God made is simple enough so that a child--or a young woman with different-abilities--could understand it--perfectly! “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life (Psalm 143:8).” “What do you do?” Seems like an easy enough question to answer. Not so, for people whose disability robbed them of their profession. Except for Anna, a young lady, who has Down syndrome. The students in my Foundations of Special Education course were learning about intellectual disabilities. I invited Anna to visit our class. My college students compiled a list of questions … [Read more...]

The Cross of Life and the Crown of Glory

carry-the-cross

What does it mean to "pick up our cross"? Pastor Charles explains. "Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.'" (Matthew 16:24) With the Easter season just around the corner, my thoughts have been turning recently to a total focus and thankfulness in my heart for the cross and the great victory that has been gained there for our lives. Jesus is very straight forward in this text and tells us exactly what we need to do in order to follow Him. He first recognizes that people will pursue Him. Some will be in genuine faith and some will be to slander and persecute the church. But for those who are looking for a Savior, He goes a step further and tells us … [Read more...]

God Can Use Our Suffering If We Let Him

OUR SUFFERING DOES MATTER, BUT TO WHO? Sometimes it seems like the whole world wants to AVOID hearing about our pain or even acknowledging our disease. But this #devotional writer explains that there is a purpose in our suffering, and eventually (maybe not today) you will find it.

Our suffering can seem to have no purpose at times, but knowing God is faithful is enough for us to hold on to during the rough times. Pastor Charles explains. "I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them." (Isaiah 42:16) I remember early in my suffering with back problems of how I questioned God and wondered why I was going through these situations. I thought of so many others who were doing much worse with their lives and it seemed as if their lives were a bed of roses. I kept on trying to tell God that I did not deserve this. I even went to the … [Read more...]

God Is Never Overwhelmed

IS YOUR ILLNESS AND CIRCUMSTANCES OVERWHELMING YOU? It is natural that they would! But... did you know that this is why we can depend on God. He is NEVER overwhelmed. He never grows tired of our prayers. He is always in control and never surprised. This #devotional writer explains how we can put our faith in Him and see the stress lessen.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by your circumstances? Do the problems seem to stack up? Fiona Burrows shares why we can rest in the fact that God is never overwhelmed. “Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them--the Lord, who remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:5-6) Have you ever had a time when it seems like everywhere you go, or every time you talk with someone, there seems to be stuff happening that’s hard? Have you had times when all you seem to hear is bad news? Life can be like that sometimes. It may seem like this will last forever--like you won't hear any good news again. Over the last few weeks I’ve heard so many … [Read more...]

How Can God Use Our Weakness When We Had Such Good Plans For Our Strengths?

OUR WEAKNESSES MAKE US FEEL SO. . . WEAK! But God can use them! This #devotional is by a pastor who found himself in a hospital bed recovering from major spinal fusion surgery 4 DAYS after becoming ordained. God certainly had some big plans!

Would God really give a man a ministry, only to take it away due to pain? Rev. Charles shares how God can use our weakness for His plans. "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9) It was September 25, 2007 and I was lying in a hospital bed just four days after being ordained to the ministry. The day prior I had a major spinal fusion surgery that lasted twelve hours. The time came though for me to get out of bed for the first time and I knew this was going to be so hard, since I had lost total control and feeling in my left foot. I remember grabbing onto a quite … [Read more...]

Seeing the Sacred Through Suffering: Does Pain Have Blessings?

ARE THERE REALLY BLESSINGS IN THE PAIN? They are so hard to find but there is a purpose in it all and many people with chronic illness will tell you that through the path of suffering, they have been blessed beyond any health they may have had.

Are there really blessings in suffering? Our new devotional writer, Pastor Chris, shares his thoughts on this. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair." (2 Corinthians 4:8) The greatest tragedy in anyone’s life is to live a life free from tragedy. When I talk like that it sounds crazy to some people. In fact it sounds crazy to most people. That’s because by the world’s standards it is crazy. The world says “avoid pain at all costs.” In God’s economy, suffering is a necessary part of seeing the sacred. In my life as the pastor of a local church, I have traveled the pathway of pain, arm in arm with the angel of death many times. I’ve come to consider him a friend. When he comes, … [Read more...]

Prayers Don’t Need to Be Perfect Because God Knows

DOES PRAYER WORK EVEN WHEN WE GET BRAIN FOG? Of course it does! When you are a pray-er -- who lives with illness-- and a lot of your prayers end in falling asleep or forgetting who you are praying for (and the list goes on) we can start to wonder if our prayers still get to the Lord. They sure do! Here is a nice reminder. #devotional and awesome video too.

Have you ever felt your ability to pray is lacking? Maybe you forget the details now that your brain is a bit foggy. But God knows. Fiona Burrows shares her thoughts. “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2) Over the last year or so, the changes in my cognitive ability have begun to affect what I remember and also how hard it is to concentrate on what I’m thinking or saying. It’s been frustrating and difficult and has even led to some embarrassing situations where I don’t remember what I’ve been told about someone. One of the other things I’ve noticed is that I’m finding it harder to pray. I’ve begun finding other ways to remember what I want to be praying about, to make sure I … [Read more...]

Where Are You, God? Will You Answer Me?

WHERE ARE YOU GOD?? WILL YOU ANSWER ME? Have you ever found yourself asking this? We all have, right? What should we do when God is quiet and yet we believe that He never leaves our side for a moment? #devotional #chronicillness

Have you ever asked, "Where are You, God?" It is okay to ask, and Karlton explains what He believes. “Oh, that I had someone to hear me! I sign now my defense—let the Almighty answer me; let my accuser put his indictment in writing. (Job 31:35) I recently told someone that I do not doubt God's existence. I have known Him for so long, seen His work in my life and the lives of others. Just like electricity, though I may not see it with my eyes, I see its effects, and know that it exists. Yet there have been many times that I wondered when God was going to show up in a situation during a time of need and have asked, "Where are you, God?" I have feared He might be "late to the party," that He seemed in no big hurry to arrive on the … [Read more...]

Even When My World Changes, God is The Same

god-is-the-same

Our circumstances and our surroundings change frequently, but God is the same. Bronlynn shares how this comforts her. “I the Lord do no change (Malachi 3:6). I know many changes are good and keep life from becoming monotonous, but I usually don’t handle them too well. One of my favorite department stores has been completely remodeled, moving different sections around and displaying an ultramodern look. It may be more up-to-date, but I don’t like it--at least not yet! My nearest grocery store no longer carries many food items that I buy, which means more trips to other stores. Fall is here and that’s a mixed change for me as well. The weather and colors are lovely but I can become down about the upcoming bleakness and coldness … [Read more...]
