Faith? Why Do People Think it is Complicated?

Anna and her mom

"Trusting God? It is complicated!" we may think. But Vicki reminds us that God made is simple enough so that a child--or a young woman with different-abilities--could understand it--perfectly! “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life (Psalm 143:8).” “What do you do?” Seems like an easy enough question to answer. Not so, for people whose disability robbed them of their profession. Except for Anna, a young lady, who has Down syndrome. The students in my Foundations of Special Education course were learning about intellectual disabilities. I invited Anna to visit our class. My college students compiled a list of questions … [Read more...]

Why Am I Overreacting About Every Little Thing?

IS YOUR ILLNESS AND PAIN LEVEL MAKING YOU REACT AT EVERY LITTLE THING?? you aren't alone! It's natural for us to lash out when we aren't feeling well, or burst into tears at the smallest thing. But we can find ways to get our feeling under a bit more control so we don't destroy the relationships we have with those around us.

Are you over-reacting to little things and see it slowly break down your relationships, your joy-factor? Diane shares how she dealt with this. “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24) When I find myself over-reacting to the little things in life; is it because I’m not interacting with the Father? I know that often as individuals that deal with chronic illness we may not always feel upbeat, or have a pleasant smile on our face. There may be times we are even quite grumpy! (At least it happens in my case!) Those times are usually when I am in the most severe pain or symptoms of my illness. Until … [Read more...]

Finding God and His Glory in The Way We See our Struggles

ARE YOU LOOKING AT GOD IN THE SHADOW OF CIRCUMSTANCES OR THE CIRCUMSTANCES SITTING IN THE SHADOW OF GOD? This devotional reminds us that we can easily lose perspective, especially when illness wears us down! Don't stop finding God in all the little ways He cares for us.

Have you spend time preparing for what your illness or treatment may bring, to only realize that God's glory can overpower it all? Are you finding God in your troubles at all? Deni explains how we all need a reminder of God's glory. "Then Moses said, 'Now show me Your glory.'" (Exodus 33:18) I sat reading a list of side effects from a medication the doctor put me on. It was warning of common side effects I could expect and also some rarer ones to be aware of and watch for. Needless to say, I didn't like much of any of them. It seems that sometimes side effects have caused more problems than the actual symptoms being treated. Then it dawned on me--I was expecting these things to happen. I was on the lookout for them, interpreting … [Read more...]

God is Faithful To Help Me Accomplish What He Desires

ARE YOU ACCOMPLISHING WHAT GOD DESIRES RATHER THAN WHAT YOU DESIRE? Or, are you putting your list of things you need to accomplish as the priority in your life?

Is God faithful to help you accomplish what He wishes? Or are you trying to do what you wish? Linda explains. "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22, 23) The last few months have been some of the roughest I can remember. There has been one thing after another to deal with physically. Then you add in family and financial needs. When you put it all together it is almost overwhelming, it is easy to begin to feel consumed. But I can testify that the verse above is so true, the Lord’s compassions never fail me. When I wake of a morning and wonder how I am going to face another day the Lord is right there to give me … [Read more...]

Living With Worry and Fear, Dread And Doubt

ARE YOU GOING THROUGH A ROUGH TIME AND CAN'T SEE THE END OF THE WORRY AND FEAR? Even though it doesn't feel like it God is still there and He tells us He will provide? How can you begin to practice faith instead of worry when the world tells you worry is a natural part of life? #devotional

Are you dealing with a LOT of worry and fear? Karlton shares that he understands and encourages you to get some support. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matthew 6:25) I sometimes think that with illness and disability, worry is itself a symptom of chronic illness. The constant stress, the adjustment to endless difficulties, the frustration of daily dealing with affliction, these things invite worry, fear, dread, and doubt. Sometimes medication is necessary to help us with the anxiety that arises from living with chronic illness. Counseling may be helpful, finding a sympathetic ear to … [Read more...]

Don’t Worry! Easy to Say, Harder to Do. . . Unless We Have Help

ARE YOU WORRIED? ARE YOU SICK OF BEING TOLD, 'DON'T WORRY!'? It is easy for healthy people to tell those of us with physical ailments that "it will all get better," or it "could be worse" (as if THAT is reassuring?) We may not be able to control our worry on our own. We just can't. But we have a God who can handle all our problems. Worrying or not is a choice and it takes discipline, practice and desire to be free from it. This #devotional explains how this all works.

Do you get stuck in worry? It's hard to take the simple advice of "don't worry" when you feel your problems are so big. Dorothea reminds us where to place that worry so we can have the joy in life God intends. "Do not fret—it leads only to evil." (Psalm 378b) Is it because I often hear, “don’t worry,” or “give it to God,” or “cast your cares. . .” that these sentiments come across as trite? Maybe it’s because the person saying it to me doesn’t pause long enough for me to respond. They launch into their lecture based on their perception of my situation without having all the facts. I know they mean well, but it can leave me frustrated. Where is the comfort I seek for my hurting heart? After all that God has seen me … [Read more...]

Refusing to Live Under The Circumstances of Our Illness

ARE YOU LIVING UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF YOUR ILLNESS? Ever notice how much of our illness is UNDER? We are undergoing treatment, our disease is underestimated and we feel underappreciated. This is an interesting article on how we can get out from UNDER our circumstances and instead learn to live OVER! #WEGO #NHBPM

Are you living under the circumstances of your illness? Too often we forget that we have a choice to be under--or over--the situations in our life. WEGO Health asks for their daily writing challenge "What is the weirdest thing about your illness?" I chose to write about how we live under the circumstances of our diseases. Day #2. Lisa Copen "How are you?" we are asked. "Okay," we reply. "Under the circumstances." Illness places us living "under" everything. The words that describe our life can feel abnormal. Many begin with "un" and we are always under. Illness is unidentified, unknown, uncharted, unnamed, underhanded, underestimated. We learn to live "under the weather." We survive by realizing the name for our illness is an … [Read more...]

Will I Live a Long Life? Questions Illness Gives Us

long-life

Illness can bring on real concerns, like "Will I have a long life?" Have you dealt with these worries? Laura shares her thoughts. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10) I handle chronic illness pretty well most of the time, but then something jolts me. This time it was a silly comic strip--Funky Winkerbean, 10/8/12. In it Les, the main character, pulls out a video cassette recording his late wife Lisa made for him. Lisa died of cancer in 2007 and made many tapes for Les and his daughter to view at pivotal moments in their lives. The caption said “If you are watching this you obviously did not … [Read more...]

When Anxious Thoughts Get Buried Instead of Surrendered

anxious thoughts

Anxious thoughts can easily overtake us. But Lisa reminds us not to bury them either. "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." (Psalm 139:23) Last week I woke up with many anxious thoughts after having a dream that my son had been placed in a classroom for both fourth and fifth graders. In the dream he had a fast-paced teacher that I was worried would leave him behind. The week before, I dreamed I had to move to get away from something dangerous, yet I was paralyzed. It wasn't fear paralyzingly me, but something I recognized as my disease preventing me from doing something, I am not really a worrier. The benefit to staying busy and keeping my mind focused on Rest Ministries "stuff" is that I will claim I … [Read more...]

Feeling Dizzy Is An Opportunity to Be Armed With Strength

feeling dizzy

"When we start feeling dizzy, we become anxious, fearful, and weak. Lisa shares how we can change these emotions. Those who stumble are armed with strength." (1 Samuel 2:4) Do you ever start feeling dizzy because of your illness or medication side effects? My feet are quite deformed from a lifetime of hammer toes and twenty years of rheumatoid arthritis. I put all weight on my heels, as I cannot place weight on the balls of my feet. This, in addition to sometimes feeling dizzy, is not a good way to stand on your two feet. My knees also go right out from under me. Some of you have heard one of my favorite attitudes: "I used to be cute to look at. Now I am just fun to watch." As I stand in a line, and attempt to just stay in one place, it … [Read more...]

God Is With You And Understands Your Illness Frustrations

god is with you

God is with you--in waiting rooms, exam rooms--wherever you may be. How easy it is to forget God is with you when worry overcomes us! “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) I’m facing a challenge that under ordinary circumstances would rattle me. But now I am downright scared and discouraged. I have previously faced it with my sons but this time have a body that is not working properly which adds additional stress--my 14-year-old daughter will have four-hour knee surgery soon. As a mom, all I want to do is be there to comfort. It will be an outpatient procedure and we will be at the hospital all day. I … [Read more...]

What Are You Holding On To While In Pain?

what-are-you-holding-on-to

You want to get rid of the pain, but what are you holding on to that will replace the bitterness, fear, or other emotions? We all need something to hold on to, so make sure it is the right thing. “We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end” (Hebrews 3:14). Seeking encouragement, I scrolled through my iPod playlist for music that would uplift. I came upon an import of songs by Twila Paris from her "Where I Stand" CD. The one that became the inspiration for this devotional is titled, “Hold On.” Take a listen to "Hold On" before reading this if possible, as the lyrics to "Hold On" perfectly explain many of our circumstances. As we face our pain and illness, one question is in … [Read more...]
