When was the last time you decided to bring a meal to a friend who is hurting? By Lisa Copen Every person and family is unique, so there is not a perfect list of what everyone should or should not do when delivering a meal. The tips below however, are things to consider when you are giving the gift of food. I know someone who is chronically ill and I'd like to volunteer to bring a meal for her family. Where do I start? While some people will be glad if you bring a meal, others may be embarrassed to accept it. I remember as a newly married woman, I was struggling a great deal with my rheumatoid arthritis. A woman from my Bible study brought me a big container of chili and said, "I made this for my family today and ended up with way too … [Read more...]

How to Organize Your Kitchen So Things Stop Falling On Your Feet

how-to-organize-under-sink

Many of my bruises occur because of dropping things on my feet and last week I opened the freezer to have half a frozen chicken fall on my toe. I literally still have a purple toe, eight days later. However, I have been taking steps in the last year to declutter, organize, and basically simplify life. I thought over the next few months I would share some of these things I have done to try to make life more organized--which means I spend less time looking for things, cleaning things, putting things away and so much more. About 5 months into my journey of decluttering I found Pinterest.com and it has helped me stay motivated when I grow frustrated with how to organize the messes. You can find them here: Lisa's Pinterest Page | Rest … [Read more...]

How to Help a Friend Who Is Ill With Household Chores

how-to-help-a-friend

There are many ways to learn how to help a friend. If you--or someone who is willing to help--can assist around the house, it's a great gift. "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." (John 13:14-15) When people wonder how to help a friend who is coping with illness, they usually think of bringing a meal, watching a child a for couple of hours, or running an errand. One of the less likely things to consider is doing a household chore or two. It can be an awkward situation, as you don't want an ill friend to think "Gee, she must think my house is a disaster if she is volunteering to dust! How embarrassing!" … [Read more...]

Bring a Meal and Make is Special With Free Printable Labels

When one is chronically ill, and a friend wishes to help her, the first thing that comes to mind is to bring a meal. In fact, since the most popular gift to bring is a meal, I wrote the book, Beyond Casseroles: 505 Ways to Encourage a Chronically Ill Friend to get people to think beyond food. Sometimes all we can think of is to bring a meal! Why is that? Well, a meal is a gift of comfort. And even though we --who are chronically ill--may be physically able to cook, it takes a burden off of us so that we can use the energy we would have spent cooking doing something else. I have discovered that many people who cook for the chronically ill and offer to bring a meal to them, are actually ill themselves. Though it is easy to understand new … [Read more...]

Devotion: Can Chores Be a Good Thing?

9-chores

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." (Colossians 3:23). It needs to be recognized, right up front, that for some of us everyday chores may be impossible. For others, they require cutting back, or taking frequent rest periods. This devotional is intended to encourage you, not make you feel unnecessary guilt. Earlier this year, after I started coughing up a small amount of blood (and went into panic mode!) this subject came to mind. A few days later a large clot was disgorged, and I made an appointment with my doctor right away. Then I tried to keep my life as normal as possible, and discovered that doing routine tasks was a help. Having to focus on the now, and on familiar things, … [Read more...]

Carrying Super Rachel – The Logistics of When Your Wife Is Chronically Ill

By Matt Horne Caring for a chronically ill wife is not what I had envisioned when I was working up the nerve to ask out "that hot girl" who would later become my wife. We were in college and she was on the cross country team. She let me know very early on in the relationship that she had a chronic illness. Nowadays, it's just part of life. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know what to do with myself if she were well. There's a reason I call her "Super Rachel." On her good days, she can run circles around me--cleaning, getting things checked off her to-do list, and having tons of fun. She's amazing. On top of that, she has the greatest attitude and rarely lets her condition get her down. As her dad says, she's an "overcomer." Instead … [Read more...]

Too Much Wheat Can Contribute to Diabetes

Just when we thought it was safe to eat whole grains . . . now, researchers are saying that eating too much wheat can contribute to diabetes. According to the researchers, " An abnormal immune response to wheat proteins may contribute to type 1 diabetes." Please, oh, please, don't take my sourdough away next! HealthDay News reported, "Their study of 42 people with type 1 diabetes found that nearly half had immune system T-cells that overreacted to wheat. The researchers also identified genes associated with this abnormal immune response. 'The immune system has to find the perfect balance to defend the body against foreign invaders without hurting itself or overreacting to the environment, & this can be particularly challenging … [Read more...]

Review: Coffee Brew Station Great for Weak Hands

My husband and I recently got a coffee pot as a gift, but it didn't quite fit the decor we wanted so we headed over to Kohl's with the $40 credit, a 30% off sale price coupon to find a new coffee pot. My right hand is quite deformed now from rheumatoid arthritis and I could barely pick up the pot each morning, so we knew a fancier, heavier pot was not the solution. We ended up with the Hamilton Beach 48465 Brewstation Summit Ultra 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker and it retails on Amazon for about $60. I love it! Here are a few things to consider: it's not a cappuccino maker & you don't use individual coffee flavors like some of them. This is basically just a regular coffee pot, but the coffee goes into a pot/container inside the … [Read more...]
