Devotion: Jesus Has Always Been Accessible to Us

nativity2

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them. . . . So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger." (Luke 14:8,9,16) Merry Christmas! The King is born! Out of all of the people on earth God could have sent His angels to, to announce the birth of His son, He sent them to the shepherds. I was recently reading a children's version of the Christmas story and it described the shepherds having one of the lowest forms of employment. In the class system, the shepherds were pretty close to the bottom in the level of respect they received for their work. It also … [Read more...]

What We Can Learn From Mary While Living with Chronic Illness

Actress Tatiana Maslany, Nativity

During this time of year when we are celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ we can easily grow to have the Christmas story sound casual since we have heard it so many times. Mary rode a donkey, there was no room in the inn, and she gave birth to Jesus in a stable, with a star overhead. I always love to take a second look at this story, however, to find a fresh perspective on it and to personalize it. This year, as I looked more closely at the life of Mary, I saw certain traits that we all can learn from, especially those with chronic illness. Mary surrendered her own will to God's plans “'I am the Lord’s servant,' Mary answered. 'May your word to me be fulfilled.'” (Luke 1:38) Mary was just a girl who had dreams of … [Read more...]

What To Do For Those Who Are Hurting When You Don’t Know What To Do

laundry-do

As the holidays approach more people than usual are looking for ways to reach out to help a hurting friend. Sadly, this shouldn't be a seasonal event, but something we do all year round. But most people just don't know how to do that reaching out! Well, thanks to a wonderful book we don't have that excuse any longer! One of my all-time favorite books is The Art of Helping: What to Say and Do When Someone is Hurting by Lauren Littauer Briggs. In fact, I am very honored to have a section in it for those with chronic illness. But the whole book is helpful for those of us who, well, care. And it is one of the few books I believe should be on the desk of every pastor and church secretary! So much so that when it was first published we … [Read more...]

Preparing Your Holiday Priorities When Chronically Ill

child-star

Many people are eager to start the chaos of preparing for the holidays, including baking, decorating, shopping and getting together with loved ones. For those with a chronic illness, however, there can be a sense of dread because our desires are much like the rest of the population, but we know our bodies will never hold up to all of the things that we would like to do. "When I think of the holidays, I immediately think of all of the things I need to do and then I am tired just thinking about it," says Karon, who lives with lupus and fibromyalgia. "I used to love to bake and do cookie exchanges. I decorated the whole house. Now just thinking about getting a tree seems overwhelming." As believers, Christmas is a time of celebrating the … [Read more...]

I Find No Fault

easter-cross

"I find no fault in Him!" The crowd heard Pilate say, And yet they took my precious Lord To Calvary to pay The price for all the sin & wrong That we would ever do. While knowing that someday we all Would st& & be judged, too. They led Him down that lonely road, "Way of Suffering" the name, They mocked Him & they scourged Him, And, they placed on Him all blame. He drank the bitter cup Without a word in His defense, But, when He cried, "Tis finished!" The angry crowd could sense This was no ordinary man Who hung there on the tree, And, gave His love, His life, His all To ransom you & me. When on the third day He arose, And conquered death & sin, He spoke to us of heavenly homes. And new life to begin. If … [Read more...]

Preparing Our Hearts for Easter

easter-cross1

The Billy Graham Evangelical Association has put together a selection of wonderful articles linked on just one page on their web site that explore the most important event in the history of the world—the death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. For example: 7 Reasons Christ Suffered & Died Proof of the Resurrection The Power of the Cross They say, "Our prayer is that the insights will guide you in your study & devotions. . . before Easter." Mine too! I plan to check it out this week for encouragement & prayer topics. I hope you will join me. When we live with illness we are often asked, "Why is God allowing you to suffer?" or "why does God let people suffer?" Sometimes we are told, "You are way too nice to suffer so much!" … [Read more...]
