Book Giveaways This Week

prayers-and

Oh, Don't ya love spring? The humming birds arrive, the flowers bloom,  the clutter starts to appear when the sun comes out. Wait a minute. I am talking about myself here. I have been trying to declutter for months. .  but I am finally hitting my home office here at Rest Ministries. I want space, open spots on my desk that don't have a pile. But I have so much good stuff! And some of those goodies are books. Most of these are books I have been given by the authors, the publishers, etc. and I just cannot keep them all. They are "like new" (I have read everything on my Kindle since 2008--much easier on my rheumatoid arthritis hands).  So these little books are gems that I have barely broken the cover on. Each day I will post the … [Read more...]

Loss, Grief and Mourning Books: Christian Resources

grief-books

Are you in a season of grief and mourning? Have you suffered a loss? Here are a list of top Christian books that address these emotions. Grief and mourning, loss. They are such a simple words yet holds sooo-o-o much emotion, don't they? To compile this list of grief and mourning books, I asked a group of Christian women authors of a group I am part of, AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association). They eagerly told me what books they recommend to people (many of them are also counselors), and what books they had written of specific areas of grief. Some of these books we have even carried in our Rest Ministries bookstore over the years such as, The Gift of Mourning Glories by Georgia Shaffer about her journey with cancer and … [Read more...]

bk-stronger-still

This book, Stronger Still: A Woman's Guide to Turning Your Hurt into Healing for Others (Deeper Still), by Edna Ellison is an amazing workbook to hold in your hand and work your way through if you are trying to figure out how to use the pain in your life to encourage other people. We have it available now at the Rest Ministries shop. I am happy to be able to call Edna a friend through a Christian women writers organization, but even I didn't know all that she had experienced in her life until I read this book. This woman has every right to write about her journey with suffering and how to use it for God's plans. This is an interactive 6-week Bible study that helps guide the reader through her pain and to a point where she can see how … [Read more...]

Worn Out and Weary

ronda2

Ronda Sturgill Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let’s encourage one another. (Hebrews 10: 23-25) Have your current circumstances left you worn out and weary? Deployments, PCS’s, work, financial strains and more have all taken their toll on military wives. In addition to these things, I’ve used a wheelchair for mobility for the past thirty-eight years. What I used to do with ease takes much more energy and effort, often leaving me feeling worn out and weary. Hebrews 10:23-25 gets me back up and going again. God always uses … [Read more...]

What To Do For Those Who Are Hurting When You Don’t Know What To Do

laundry-do

As the holidays approach more people than usual are looking for ways to reach out to help a hurting friend. Sadly, this shouldn't be a seasonal event, but something we do all year round. But most people just don't know how to do that reaching out! Well, thanks to a wonderful book we don't have that excuse any longer! One of my all-time favorite books is The Art of Helping: What to Say and Do When Someone is Hurting by Lauren Littauer Briggs. In fact, I am very honored to have a section in it for those with chronic illness. But the whole book is helpful for those of us who, well, care. And it is one of the few books I believe should be on the desk of every pastor and church secretary! So much so that when it was first published we … [Read more...]

Why I Love My Kindle. . . and You May Like One Too!

kindle-touch

The Amazon Kindle. If you don't have one it may just be on your wish list this holiday season. I (Lisa) have had the blessing of owning one since 2008 when my husband surprised me with the very first version for my 40th birthday. He thought I would be having joint replacement surgery on four fingers soon and it would come in handy. Little did he know surgery would be put aside a few weeks later as I spent a week in the hospital (the flesh eating bacteria, nasty stuff!) I receive many emails from people who have asked me what I like about the Kindle and how it works. I thought I would put all my answers in one place so you can see why I like it and make your own decision. For the record, I had the first version of Kindle 2008-2010, and … [Read more...]
