heat-lamb

So the rain or snow is falling, the cold evenings abound. Winter. It is here. And when we are chronically ill we may not be able to run out for evening get togethers with friends. We may not even be able to turn up the heater as much as we'd like since we are watching our budget. How do you create some sense of coziness in your life? Here are a few of our best tips. Browse some blogs of your interests you rarely indulge Whatever your interest is, there are multiple blogs about it. The other night I spent over an hour visiting blogs for vintage kitchen decorating. I've shared how I treasure my grandmother's kitchen table in a blog and have decorated with antiques I have collected over the years. (I don't really like to cook or clean, … [Read more...]

Make Your Own Artwork for Pennies

When you live with a chronic illness your house can get so dreary. We are often there--at home--looking at the same old knick knacks day after day, watching those dust bunnies grow into adulthood (oh, I'm sorry, maybe that is just at my house!) Well, either way, summer is just around the corner & maybe you are looking around wondering how you could cheer the place up. Or maybe you have kids that are out of school & they are bored & need a project. Here is a cool little tool we found! You can create a poster with the printer you have, even though your printer will only take regular sized 8 1/2 x 11 pieces of paper. Posterazor has a great video that shows how to download this free software & then how to upload your print. I can see … [Read more...]

Breakfast on Your Body –Without the Calories

So this woman I know, who shall remain nameless to keep her dignity (hi, mom!) has always sworn on her mother's advice to wrap raw bacon around a toe that is starting to get an ingrown toe nail. Evidently the fat of the bacon will pull out the infection. I have to admit, I've seen it work. . . But for those of us with not-so-hot immune systems, I wouldn't recommend putting a piece of bacon on your toe. (Nor leaving it in your sock, where your dog can pull it out & eat it & have to go to the vet &. . . well, that's a whole other story). But look what we found as a humorous alternative? Bacon & egg b&ages! Yeah, we know this post likely won't help you grow in great depths spiritually, but we hope it brings a smile to your face. We can … [Read more...]

What Does Your Name in Japanese Mean?

Have you ever wondered what your name in Japanese means? No? Then perhaps you really are getting enough sleep. Some of us here at Rest Ministries deal with a lot of insomnia and these online generators that tell us things like what your name in Japanese means are just too fun to pass up. Just put in your first name and see what it translates to in Japanese. I put in my son's name and get this. . .  his name means: Compassionate > Genius > Wild ... yep! That sounds just about exactly how I would describe him. I put in other family's names and got a laugh when my dad's name meant "Old Will Work." I wonder if I could make that into a Father's Day card? Hmmm. Amuse yourself during one of those moments of insomnia with Your … [Read more...]

Can Your Or Your Kids Set a New Record? Fun Summer Project

Summer is coming soon & if you are a mom or dad with a chronic illness you may be wondering how you are going to fill in some of that spare time your children have. Here is one web site that get the kids, even if they are only 6 or 7 years old, to start thinking about what they could do to set a record. The Universal Record Database is touted as "the definitive site for human achievement." While I don't think seeing how many spoons you can knock off the counter with your nose in 20 seconds can be defined as a human achievement. . . who am I to judge? The fun thing about this site is that you can do almost anything, video tape it, & stick it up as a new record. One gal decided to see how many plastic spoons she could hold in 1 h& (45). … [Read more...]

Living with Chronic Pain Isn’t Fun . . . But it Can Be Funny!

I was walking through a store yesterday & overheard two women who were clerks at the gift shop speaking. The conversation went something like this: "She was recently diagnosed with MS, but she is doing really well. She has a really great attitude." "Well, she must be in remission then if she has a good attitude." "No, I don't think she's in remission. She has just decided to take whatever life throws at her & try to have best attitude possible." "Well, most people go into remission when they have MS. It probably can't be that bad." It took everything in me to walk by & not jump in & share exactly what I thought of the one woman's perception of chronic illness. One of the more difficult parts of illness is learning to live with chronic … [Read more...]

Teen Starts “Wear iT Wednesday” to Spread Faith Message

We thought this was a cool idea & it's always encouraging to see youth doing something for Christ. Although this isn't specific to illness, we thought you may want to pass it along to your own kids, gr&kids, youth pastors, etc. Maybe we should start a day where we wear a button or something to create more invisible illness awareness & where our true hope comes from too? _______________________________________ “Wear iT Wednesday™” is a grass roots movement which empowers Christian youth to show the joy of their faith as one community. Wear iT Wednesday™ is the idea of college senior, Chelsea Eubank. Chelsea’s vision is to register over 1,000,000 youth on www.wearitwednesday.com to gain their commitment to wear their favorite … [Read more...]

Ever Feel Like Your Body is a Crime Scene?

Ever get sick of being poked or having to take your medications via a needle? When I was in the hospital for a week I was given shots every few hours & my stomach looked like a crime scene.
