When I In Awesome Wonder Consider All – Video

how-great-thou-art

Happy Sunday! Years ago before our son was born my husband and I had the chance to take an Alaskan cruise. It was an amazing time with my family and I felt like I truly saw God's hand on our earth. As we went through the glaciers and heard the cracking of the ice, I remember they played, "How Great Thou Art" over the loudspeakers on the ship. I will always recall the awe of seeing what God created and truly how great He was. Seeing chunks of icebergs fall into the water in Glacier Bay was an extraordinary experience that made me feel very small, yet also cared for. The lyrics, "when I in awesome wonder. . . " took on new meaning. "Oh, God," I prayed, "You are an awesome wonder. Never let me forget to see that in ways each … [Read more...]

Your Father Will Help You Cross The Finish Line Too – Video

DEREK

Happy Sunday! I first saw this video when I was sitting at my son's karate class and I nearly started to cry. Soon the 2012 Summer Olympics will begin and they will be filled with many touching moments. But this video below is of a special young man, Derek Redmond, who pulled a hamstring in the 1992 Olympics when running the 400 meters semi-final. As he limped around the track, his dad met him and helped him finish. There is noting wrong with wanting to finish the races in our lives, but look around, because God isn't expecting you to run the race on your own. Like Derek's dad, God is running to meet you and run beside you, at whatever pace you are able, incredibly proud of who you are. You can read more about this moment on ESPN's … [Read more...]

What Excuses Are You Making? – Video

mattscott

Happy Sunday! Have you just felt like not doing something lately? Avoiding it, even if there are consequences? Maybe it is not your physical pain that is preventing it, but a situation when you just can't get motivated. Let me introduce you to Matt Scott, who was born with spina bifida and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Here he participated in a variety of sports alongside his able-bodied peers. Now a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball squad, Scott has won four national championships. He was also recently selected to the Paralympic squad for the second time. The 23-year-old college senior attributes his achievements to a dedicated work ethic, and to a support structure of friends and family that … [Read more...]

Just As Long as You Stand By Me – Video

stand-by

Happy Sunday! It is so easy to get caught up in our own little world, even the news about the city we live in or our country, and forget that we are all God's children, scattered all over the world. We all hurt, we all need the Lord, and. . . we need each other too. This is a beautiful video that will remind you that there are people world-wide that are saying, "Just as long as you stand by me than I can _____." (Imagine, what could you do if someone promised to stand by you?) Be sure to listen past the 1-minute mark for more surprises. What Are You Holding On To While In Pain?

what-are-you-holding-on-to

You want to get rid of the pain, but what are you holding on to that will replace the bitterness, fear, or other emotions? We all need something to hold on to, so make sure it is the right thing. “We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end” (Hebrews 3:14). Seeking encouragement, I scrolled through my iPod playlist for music that would uplift. I came upon an import of songs by Twila Paris from her "Where I Stand" CD. The one that became the inspiration for this devotional is titled, “Hold On.” Take a listen to "Hold On" before reading this if possible, as the lyrics to "Hold On" perfectly explain many of our circumstances. As we face our pain and illness, one question is in … [Read more...]

Don’t Forget to Say Thank You – Video

thankyou

Happy Sunday! I was in college driving to church on a Sunday morning when Boys II Men came on the radio. As one who loves gospel and jazz, I immediately turned it up and was surprised to hear this style of music on the pop radio channel. Here at Rest Ministries we talk a lot about struggles. We don't want to put a "Pollyanna" spin on things, because when we have an attitude adjustment it is because we gave our circumstances over to the Lord--not because we woke up and decided it would all be okay. But that is not to say our attitude can't use some adjusting! And one of the ways we can do this is to just tell God, "Thank You!" You may not be a fan of your situation right now, but there is still something you can find in your life to … [Read more...]

Matt Stutzman Finds Advantages In Disabilities

archer

What does Matt Stutzman do that we each can do with our own disabilities? Find the advantages we have been given through God's "gifts" of our weaknesses. "From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." (Ephesians 4:16) Matt Stutzman was born without arms, but on the archery range he recently broke the Guinness World Record for the longest shot on target at 230 yards--14 yards further than the last one set by a man who had both arms. And he has earned a spot on the 2012 US Paralympic Team. In an article by MSNBC, Matt Stutzman shares, "I believe how I shoot is an advantage, because I use my leg --and my leg is the strongest part of my … [Read more...]

Dad, Your Kids Are Watching You – Video

dad2

Happy Sunday! Oh, how we love our dads. There is a saying, "Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad. But in our society today, dads are getting a bad rap. Just turn on any sitcom and see who is the "joke" of every laugh. Dads get far too little respect. And our sons and daughters are watching. As we celebrate Father's Day today remember your dad. perhaps they are not pleasant memories and you still have bitterness to hand over to the Lord. Perhaps you have just got caught up in life and have not talked to him lately. Maybe, if you are a dad it is time to be a dad, and not just a withdrawn father. We couldn't resist sharing a couple of our favorite videos today. If you are receiving this in your email, you … [Read more...]

When We All Get to Heaven – Video

when-we-all-get-to-heaven

Happy Sunday! I grew up in the Presbyterian church so am familiar with many of the good old hymns. I enjoy the new worships style songs they sing at my church now, but there is something precious about the hymns. A few years ago I came across an Alan Jackson CD of hymns. Evidently, he put it together for his mom, but then decided to go ahead and release it. His mom even sings along with him on one of the songs. "When We All Get to Heaven" was written in 1898. And if you are feeling a bit blue this morning, perhaps frustrated that you are not able to attend church, remember there are better days coming! When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory! If … [Read more...]
