What is the Best Time of Day to…

stop-watch

Ever stood around the pharmacy & wondered where all the people suddenly came from? As someone who lives with a chronic illness you may want to print this article out for your fridge or to stick in your Woman's Health Resource Journal to refer to when you are making plans. When should I have surgery? As early as possible in the morning. When you live with an illness I know it can be hard to get up & get there to a surgical center or hospital. But let's be realistic. . . are you really sleeping anyway? And most often you are unable to eat, drink or take your medications in the morning, so the sooner in the day you can get in, the better off you will be physically. Plus, studies have shown that patients have fewer anesthesia … [Read more...]

Nurse Comforts Patients with Original Songs

rod

If you have spent time in the hospital you know just how quickly the thrill of being in charge of the remote control can dry up. If family members or friends visit, you feel torn between the feelings of gratefulness that someone cares, & yet being exhausted by a simple conversation. Nurses, however, can hold so much influence however, in how our hospital stay really feels. When I was stuck in the hospital for 8 days with the flesh eating bacteria I didn't have a whole lot of visitors. (Can't imagine why, huh?) It was a nurse on her Sunday shift who sat & talked to me about her kids, the Fireproof movie, & other day to day stuff that made a couple hours quickly pass. Even nicer, when another nurse arrived for the next shift she said the … [Read more...]

Pain Solutions Magazine Online Has Article by Lisa

pain-solutions

Magazines continue to go through phases of trying to get off the ground & Pain Solutions is no exception. it was supposed to be out last summer of 2009, & just now their first issue has come out & it's only digital. But . . . we underst& that all too well around here! Please note: Here is my paragraph of disclaimer: While it is a secular publication & Rest Ministries does not recommend or endorse it in any way, I am excited to be able to go out "into the world" so more people can hear about Rest Ministries. Still, did they have to put a half nude woman on the cover? I grow weary of this! . . . but this is one of the reasons Rest Ministries exists. So you have been forewarned; it's not suitable for everyone. I have an article (short … [Read more...]

Half USA Lives with Chronic Condition

For years now I've been saying that 1 in 3 people in the USA lived with a chronic condition. . . & then it went to nearly 1 in 2. When I speak I often remind people that if it's not them, it's likely someone beside them. The person in line at the bank who is fidgeting (because she can't st& for long) or the woman at the grocery store who leaves her cart (because she needs to go rest for a few minutes.) So today when I saw a similar news story, I thought "Yay! Confirmation." You can watch the video below or read the actual news story here at KOB.com's web site, >"Almost Have The Country Has a Chronic Illness." New Airline Laws Are in Place Today

airplane

A few years ago my son & I traveled alone to Oregon from San Diego. We were stuck for hours in Phoenix, AZ on the tarmac where it was over 105 degrees--& the air conditioning in the plane was broken. Ironically, with the air conditioning broken, we were not allowed to take off, however, they couldn't get us back to the terminal. After a few hours we returned, they fixed the plane & got us back on. They assured us they realized it was HOT but that as soon as we got into the air, it would cool down. Over 30 minutes later the pilot came on the intercom to tell us that sadly, since we'd gone back to the terminal, the "computer" had bumped our plane off the schedule to take off, so we had to "wait our turn." We sat there another 90 minutes or … [Read more...]

Track How Much Air Pollution is Near Your Kid’s Schools

smokestack

Ever wonder why so many kids in your child's class seem to have asthma? Are there days the school moves recess indoors due to air pollution? As those of us with chronic illness realize, chemical insensitivities can lead to many health problems now & down the road. USA Today has created a great tool for parents to use & it takes less than 10 seconds. I just put in my son's school & found it is in the 68th percentile (rather good actually). USA Today uses Google Maps & lots of data to track toxic air pollution outside 128,000 USA schools to create this site, The Smokestack Effect. The site is packed with everything you can think of regarding clean air (or dirty air) & schools. Each school is given a national rank in comparison to other … [Read more...]

Faith in God Can Lessen Depression – But We Need to Be Careful with the ‘Facts’

man-headache

Okay, two points before we look at the recent study that says faith in God can relieve depression. Most of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior would admit that having this as our foundation does bring us peace that the world cannot give us. That said, this study can easily be used as a way of saying, "See, even research has shown that Christians really shouldn't get depressed! So, snap out of it!" I'm both thrilled that science can somehow prove knowing God makes a difference, & a bit scared that studies like this give not only friends of those who suffer from mental health issues, but our pastors & counselors, more "proof" that depression isn't real or that it is always a choice we make. So here are the study results: … [Read more...]

There are a Growing Number of Infections From Acupuncture

acupuncture

Acupuncture can be an alternative treatment option that can be very beneficial in relieving some pain & possibly other symptoms of a disease or condition. According to Wikipedia, "Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting & manipulating filiform needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. The word acupuncture comes from the Latin acus, 'needle', & pungere, 'to prick.'" According to Patrick Professor Woo, colleagues from the University of Hong Kong & the lead author in a study, "acupuncture may pose risks to patients as needles are inserted up to several centimeters beneath the skin." Medical News Today says: Most patients recover from infections. However, Professor Woo explains that 5 to 10 … [Read more...]
