What’s a Man With an Illness do as a New Empty Nester?

man-sad2

I am the father of a 22-year-old son who recently moved out of the house. My wife works at a local craft store full time, but I have been unable to work the last few years due to a degenerative chronic illness. Usually it seems the women grieve an "empty nest" more than the men, but since I was the one around the house with my son, I feel like it is impacting me more than ever. I'm quickly getting depressed about how quiet is & how, well, dull my life actually is without the energy of my son here. Where do I go from here? -Jonathan Jonathan, it's interesting that you should bring this up. My best friend (Kathleen Y'Barbo) & I just wrote a book for Empty Nest moms titled, "The House is Quiet. . .Now What?" In it, we deal with nine … [Read more...]

Do We Really Need All The Drugs?

woman-question

What do you think about the multiple drugs we have to take? When one lives as I do with fibromyalgia & chronic pain as well as other symptoms, do you think some of it is a crutch? Lack of faith? Or what? —Margaret deVries, Ladson, SC No one would tell a child with diabetes that her insulin was a “crutch.” Nobody would think that a man with a heart condition lacked faith because of his dependence on nitroglycerin. We all underst& that medications help hurting bodies to function more normally. So, I suspect that your question goes deeper than that. Perhaps others have questioned the validity of your illness, fibromyalgia. Chronic pain syndromes are no different from diseases such as diabetes or heart disease. Seeking relief … [Read more...]

Do Pro-biotic Foods Work?

jonna-fal

With the many medications I am on I continually fighting c&ida. Does the yogurt that is advertised as having probiotics like Activa or Yo-Plus really make a difference & how much of it do I have to eat? Would the benefits be worth the additional calories & sugar? -Diane Great question, Diane! I have found a bag of mixed information on Activia-everything from it containing an abundance of sugar (34 grams in an 8 ounce serving), to chemically engineered ingredients like modified corn starch. Sugar feeds c&ida, so you'll need to monitor your intake closely & I suggest you a start a daily food journal. Clear your diet of all yeast containing foods & white flour/white sugar based products & switch to whole grains & breads made without … [Read more...]

My Family Doesn’t See The Benefit of Me Doing Online Ministry When Bed-Bound

lynn-fox-adams=smaller

I spend a great deal of time in bed due to my illness & have made some amazing friendships & really feel like God has given me a ministry on the Internet reaching out to other people who are hurting & encouraging them. What Exercise Can I Do While Stuck in Bed?

sleep

Got any good ideas for workouts for when you are bed-bound once in a while? Cynthia Jean The most effective exercises to do while bedfast, are called isometrics. These exercises do not involve movement, yet they challenge the muscle tissues. Isometric exercises can be used on every muscle in the body. An example of an isometric exercise is to tighten your stomach. Do this by pulling the belly button towards the spine. It’s the same feeling as if you were trying to squeeze into a tight pair of pants. Hold this contraction for a count of two, then release & tighten again. Repeat for eight to ten repetitions. doctor-question

What do you suggest to a patient who likely has a chronic illness but whose doctor refuses to treat her or refer her to a specialist? She is suffering & getting depressed. —name withheld Does your friend have an HMO that requires her primary physician to be a “gate keeper?” In this model, doctors must cut costs by limiting referrals. How Has The New Age Movement Affected The Medical Field?

amy-chai

The New Age Movement has a lot to say about spirituality, but it rejects Christ’s claim of absolute truth.  The idea that truth is a matter of personal preference has influenced our culture, our political system, & even our churches.  It comes as no surprise that New Age philosophy has affected the field of medicine. Modern “conventional” medicine sprang from the uniquely Christian idea that truth never changes.  Shamanism & alchemy were utterly debunked in the intellectual wildfire sparked by the reformation of the Christian Church.  Science as we know it was born. Now “alternative” medicine is gaining ground, offering a more spiritual approach to physical healing.  Unfortunately, the religious philosophy it is based … [Read more...]
