Devotional: As We Refresh Others, We Are Refreshed, Even When We Don’t Feel Well

This is the actual house Bronlynn writes about...

“He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25b). There is a lovely home in my city that lifts my spirits each time I see it. I drive by it intentionally because it makes me feel happy and refreshed just by looking at it. It is separated from the street by a white wooden fence, and each summer this fence is covered with beautiful flowers. The house is very neat and cozy-looking, giving the impression that anyone is welcome to stop by for a visit. I also know a lovely, godly woman who reminds me of this house. She is a delight to be around, and although I’m sure she has problems, the joy and refreshment of her presence is like those cheery flowers. She is a model I would like to imitate. Living with pain … [Read more...]

Book Giveaways This Week

prayers-and

Oh, Don't ya love spring? The humming birds arrive, the flowers bloom,  the clutter starts to appear when the sun comes out. Wait a minute. I am talking about myself here. I have been trying to declutter for months. .  but I am finally hitting my home office here at Rest Ministries. I want space, open spots on my desk that don't have a pile. But I have so much good stuff! And some of those goodies are books. Most of these are books I have been given by the authors, the publishers, etc. and I just cannot keep them all. They are "like new" (I have read everything on my Kindle since 2008--much easier on my rheumatoid arthritis hands).  So these little books are gems that I have barely broken the cover on. Each day I will post the … [Read more...]

Devotion: The Lord of Compassion and Mercy Can Turn Suffering to Joy

hold-hands2

"When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, 'Don’t cry.'” (Luke 7: 13) Our Lord’s heart goes out to His people when they must endure pain and suffering, as stated in the verse above. Our Jesus is the Lord of compassion and mercy. We can see in the gospel of Luke, Chapter 7, examples that prove His compassion for His people. The Lord was anxious to fulfill the needs of the people He encountered--their physical, as well as spiritual ones. One account tells of a widow whose only son had died and was about to be buried. The Lord knew the woman had suffered much loss in her life and was well acquainted with grief. Luke says that when Jesus saw her, He had compassion on her. The Lord brought her only son back from … [Read more...]

Free Meal Delivery Printable Labels to Give A Special Touch

When one is chronically ill, and a friend wishes to help her, the first thing that comes to mind is to bring her a meal. In fact, since the most popular gift to bring is a meal, I wrote the book, Beyond Casseroles: 505 Ways to Encourage a Chronically Ill Friend to get people to think beyond food. Having said, that, however, a meal is a gift of comfort. And even though we may be physically able to cook, it takes a burden off of us so that we can use the energy we would have spent cooking doing something else. I have discovered that many people who cook for the chronically ill are actually ill themselves. Though it is easy to understand new mommies and those who have just had surgery are in need of meals, those who see a chronically ill … [Read more...]

Devotion: I Will Give God My Fears and My Fatigue From This Illness

flower

"My soul finds help in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my Rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken." (Psalm 62:1-2) It is late winter. Cold, gray and blustery. Generally every year after Christmas, I have a "crash." That is a time when my autoimmune diseases flare up, and I have an unusual amount of pain and fatigue. At first it is a few weeks of big pain. The kind of pain where your skin hurts, even to the fingernails. Trying to lay still on a wrinkled sheet is intolerable. The pain season usually lasts a few weeks. Then I move on to my "beached whale" mode. That is such a time of fatigue that sometimes I feel too tired to breathe. I have to ponder the idea of opening a can of soup, or … [Read more...]

Devotion: Finding Daily Strength By Living Each Day of Illness in A ‘Manna Rhythm’

daily-manna

“I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day” (Exodus 16:4). “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life’ ” (John 6:35). I recently read the book, Depression: Looking Up from the Stubborn Darkness by Edward Welch. Among other things, the author suggested getting in to a “manna rhythm” of daily living. That means several things to me. The Old Testaments relates how God provided manna for the Israelites in the wilderness, giving only enough for that day except on the day before the Sabbath, thus teaching them to rely on Him daily. Tomorrow’s provisions were not given today. As I deal with depression and other problems, living in a manna rhythm is … [Read more...]

Devotion: Everything Is Beautiful, Seeing Illness As Part of God’s Plan

4-beautiful

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11) It’s Autumn in Melbourne and the trees are changing color. There’s a street near my home that is lined with beautiful oak trees and the color from those trees is amazing. It only seems last week, there was no sign of red in the leaves, yet each time I drive beneath them, there is a little more color. I thought once it would be good to take a picture of the same tree, each day as it changed color and lost its leaves--but even then, we would still miss some of the beauty. Somehow I find it hard to believe that it’s Autumn. Often, I feel like I’m just … [Read more...]

Devotion: God Knows You and He Knows Your Suffering When No One Else Does

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God." (Romans 8:26-27) The Lord knows us. He knows us better than anyone ever has, or ever will know us. He knows and understands our infirmities, the daily afflictions that trip us up and restrict us. There is comfort in knowing that no matter what we are going through, the Lord understands and is with us as we suffer. Do you feel that sometimes no one can comprehend the degree of pain, frustration, or depression that your illness is … [Read more...]

Is There Such a Thing as Being Too Nice?

too-nice

By Leslie Vernick Do you ever find yourself saying "yes" when you want to (or should) say "no"? For example, several years back, a graduate student asked me if I thought she would make a good counselor. I knew her gifts weren't strongest in that area, but I didn't want to hurt her feelings. She left our conversation believing I thought she was capable. We all do it. We say "yes" when our honest response should be "no." But let's take a look at the cost of being too nice. We Hurt People It amazes me how unaware we are of how we injure people by being too nice. Isn't that why we're nice to begin with? We don't want to hurt people? When I wasn't completely honest with my intern, I unintentionally hurt her. She spent time, energy, and … [Read more...]
