Devotion: Finding True Rest When Exhausted From Illness

01-rest

“And God blessed the Seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating He had done.” (Genesis 2:3) Recently I read about a research study addressing the amount of oxygen a workman needs each day. On average, a person breathes 30 ounces of oxygen a day, but uses 31. By the end of the day he has a 1 ounce deficit. While sleeping, he breathes more oxygen than needed to sleep, so he awakens with 5/6ths of the lost ounce, not completely refreshed. At the end of the week, he again has a 1 ounce deficit. He needs a days rest to restore the oxygen. Over time, without regular rest cell death occurs. Enough cell death and the person dies. But as long as he rests every seventh day, he will be … [Read more...]

Devotion: Being a Man Who Lives With Illness

being-a-man

"Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7) What does it take to be a man? Must one be stoic, never showing any weakness? Should a man hide his feelings, and pretend that everything is fine, even when it isn't? It is my experience that women are generally more willing to discuss their problems than men. There are exceptions, myself being one, but I think it is safe to say that men do not easily admit weakness, and they rarely share problems with other men. This is especially true of the older generations of men. My guess is that many men suffer affliction in silence, feeling it is their duty to bear their burden … [Read more...]

Devotion: Returning To God Is Easier Than You May Think

23-troubles

"'This is what the Lord Almighty says,'Return to Me,' declares the Lord Almighty, 'and I will return to you,' says the Lord Almighty." (Zechariah 1:3) Recently I was sitting at my desk on the computer when my son came running in, put a nerf gun up to my face within 6 inches and his finger "slipped." It hit right near my eye. It stung, but my immediate frustration that he would even point it at me (rule #1: broken) and what could have happened if it had hit my eye (being prone to infections easily) caused me, well, I am embarrassed to say I erupted! "You know better than that," I yelled! "You could have hurt Mommy!" He took off and ran outside, upset at himself and scared of my reaction. Then I felt badly. I went outside and found … [Read more...]

Devotion: The Journey of Life Is Not Meant to Be Done Alone

28-journey

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." (1 Thessalonians 5:11) I remember listening to a pastor at a service where my parents were being received into membership. He talked about them coming to share part of their journey at that church. We are each on a life journey and that journey may take us in many directions; our paths will cross with many people--some we will value and others we may wish we hadn't met at all. There will be circumstances beyond our control, decisions that we will make - both right and wrong. We think that our lives will work out in a certain way, but then things change and the reality is far different. My life changed dramatically at the age of 24. When I look … [Read more...]

Review: Coffee Brew Station Great for Weak Hands

My husband and I recently got a coffee pot as a gift, but it didn't quite fit the decor we wanted so we headed over to Kohl's with the $40 credit, a 30% off sale price coupon to find a new coffee pot. My right hand is quite deformed now from rheumatoid arthritis and I could barely pick up the pot each morning, so we knew a fancier, heavier pot was not the solution. We ended up with the Hamilton Beach 48465 Brewstation Summit Ultra 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker and it retails on Amazon for about $60. I love it! Here are a few things to consider: it's not a cappuccino maker & you don't use individual coffee flavors like some of them. This is basically just a regular coffee pot, but the coffee goes into a pot/container inside the … [Read more...]
