Devotion – Think!

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true. . .” (Philippians 4:8) I am sure we have all read this verse many times. It has edified & encouraged, it is also hard to read at times, especially when gaining control of our thoughts seems out of our control. Depression is an illness, it is a disease that, left to its sinister ways, can destroy & degrade a life. Depression is made that much harder to cope with when you are not able to take the drugs that help so many others. I have personally suffered varying forms of depression. It sneaks up on you like a dark damp fog rolling in off the bay. Sometimes you can even see it coming, but it fools you into thinking that the darkness won’t be so bad this time. PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric … [Read more...]

Faith in God Can Lessen Depression – But We Need to Be Careful with the ‘Facts’

Okay, two points before we look at the recent study that says faith in God can relieve depression. Most of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior would admit that having this as our foundation does bring us peace that the world cannot give us. That said, this study can easily be used as a way of saying, "See, even research has shown that Christians really shouldn't get depressed! So, snap out of it!" I'm both thrilled that science can somehow prove knowing God makes a difference, & a bit scared that studies like this give not only friends of those who suffer from mental health issues, but our pastors & counselors, more "proof" that depression isn't real or that it is always a choice we make. So here are the study results: … [Read more...]

Depressed? Here are some tips for mild depression

By Stanley Popovich Some people who have a chronic illness can get depressed. Sometimes this depression can get the best of them. As a result, here is a short list of techniques that a person can use to help manage their depression & their illness. One of the ways to manage your depression is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements & realistic thinking. For example, you may be afraid that you will stay depressed & things will never improve. This is not true. Things change from day to day & it is hard to predict what may happen down the road. Focus on … [Read more...]

Even Minimal Activity Decreases Depression

If you are stuck in a rut right now & feeling the blues of winter you likely have heard how exercise can boost your mood & decrease levels of depression. However, when your body is sore & you are feeling depressed, who actually feels like exercising? Personally, we'd much rather grab a bowl of macaroni & cheese & watch a Lifetime movie. The good news is that although lots of studies may have shown that exercise can decrease depression, a new health survey done in Britain with 20,000 people, has revealed that it actually takes very little physical activity to lift your spirits. Just 1-3 twenty-minute sessions a week of activity reduced people’s suffering of depression. In fact, they found that the biggest impact on one's mood, came … [Read more...]

Is Your Loved One Depressed?

By Dena Dyer Is your loved one or friend depressed? If you're fairly certain they are, you are in the position to help. You're also in the uncomfortable place of trying to help someone who may not be able to (or want to) help themselves. I'm not a medical professional, & I'm not a counselor. But I am a layperson who has experienced both short-term & long-term depression, & I've been able (with God's help) to live for several years now in a mostly-sustained place of good mental health. Life isn't perfect, of course, & neither am I. Some days are better than others, & I'm not "cured," but my life is so much better--& my faith is so much stronger--than it was just a few years ago. Lately, I've been feeling that God is doing a new … [Read more...]

His social skills were way behind his peers at times & other times he was adored by his classmates. The opinions of the educators did not match our opinions of him. He was always fixated on details of mechanical workings, recited information as if he was … [Read more...]
