"Why won't God heal you?" These words can sting because they feel like judgement, but I have learned how to answer with bold faith. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28) Many times I'm asked, "Why doesn't God heal you?" or "Why does God allow you to be in such pain?" What happened today, is a good example that. . . Devotion: High or Low: What is My Level of Praise?

"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God." (Psalm 42:5) Tony Evans recently posted this comment on his web page: "When your level of complaining is at an all time high, it could mean that your level of praise is at an all time low." As it read it, I realized just how true it is. As I continued to think on it, I questioned: What makes my level of praise hit an all time low? It didn't take me long to figure out the answer. "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." (2 (Corinthians 4:7) On the way home from my chiropractor I saw a bumper sticker. It read: "POWERLESS." I thought, How depressing to be powerless! Am I powerless? Where does power originate? Am I powerless over my pain? My initial response was "yes." But then I had to change it to "no." I have a lot of power over my pain. I can allow my pain to be in control, or I can take control. Although there are some activities I can't do because of the pain, there are many I can do. I focus on the "cans" rather than the "cannots." Powerless. Devotion: Pain is Only Part of Who I Am

(Psalm 139:13-14) In October 2000, I injured my back. Eight back surgeries have left me with "failed back surgery syndrome." Due to nerve and muscle damage in my back and left leg, I live with chronic pain. The other day a friend took me out to run some errands. We stopped to enjoyed lunch. During our conversation, my friend said something that stuck with me. "Pain in only one aspect of you. There is more to you and our friendship besides your pain. When Do We Sit Back And Let God Provide Versus Take Responsibility?

"And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) Since God will supply, do I just sit back and do nothing? Or do I have a responsibility to do something? If I do something, is that showing a lack of faith, or just being responsible? Now that I've got you thinking, I'll share my thoughts on the question. I think it's a combination of both --trusting God and doing my part. God does expect me to act responsibly and use my resources well. (Deuteronomy 7:9) When you live with chronic pain you never know the type of day you will have. Oh, I can plan, but there are things of which I have no control, that can increase my pain level. Weather, good and bad, can increase pain. A simple movement, like emptying the dishwasher or brushing my teeth can send the pain through the roof. And of course, my attitude can affect my pain.
