Where Is The Justice?

justice

46 million people are on food stamps, 15 percent of Americans. July saw the highest level of layoffs in 16 months, the steepest jump since the recession. The president promises that the next few months will be about jobs. The reporters says it's all about. . . Jobs.   Jobs.   Jobs. But talking about jobs doesn't make them materialize. People are still hungry. I read Jeremiah 33:2-3. "'This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it-—the Lord is His name: 'Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.'" Life is messy. But God is still on the throne. He says to call to Him and He will answer and He … [Read more...]

How In The World Do You Find Joy When Talking to A Medical Bill Collector?

HOW TO STAY SANE WHEN TALKING TO MEDICAL BILL COLLECTORSl Ugh! this has got to be one of my all-time LEAST favorite things to do as they talk in circles, tranfer you around, cut you off, mess up the figures. Here are some tips on not losing your mind--or your temper.

If you have a chronic illness, odds are you have spoken to a bill collector. Whether it is from a hospital, doctor, pharmacy, insurance or collections office, it can be very frustrating. How do you find joy? By Lisa Copen Sixteen months after I had four joints replaced in my hand I received a large bill that looked like a duplicate of one I had already paid. The name on the bill however, was "Joe." My husband's name (who carried the insurance) is Joel. I called the surgery center and explained that I believed there were two accounts and one was a duplicate of the other. The woman in accounting didn't believe so. "That is just how it is addressed," she explained. The bill is for Joel." "No," I replied. "Everything on this bill says … [Read more...]

Track How Much Air Pollution is Near Your Kid’s Schools

Ever wonder why so many kids in your child's class seem to have asthma? Are there days the school moves recess indoors due to air pollution? As those of us with chronic illness realize, chemical insensitivities can lead to many health problems now & down the road. USA Today has created a great tool for parents to use & it takes less than 10 seconds. I just put in my son's school & found it is in the 68th percentile (rather good actually). USA Today uses Google Maps & lots of data to track toxic air pollution outside 128,000 USA schools to create this site, The Smokestack Effect. The site is packed with everything you can think of regarding clean air (or dirty air) & schools. Each school is given a national rank in comparison to other … [Read more...]

You Can Learn to Use The Computer Better

A lot of you email us saying, "I haven't quite figured this out yet." Or "I don't know how to do this on your web site." While we are trying to keep it as simple as possible here at Rest Ministries with emailed subscriptions & search boxes, we know it can feel overwhelming sometimes--especially if your medications are making your brain feel like it's on a roller coaster ride. But don't sweat it! A quarter of Internet users said they wanted to search Google for something, but when placed in front of a computer, couldn't figure it out. Instead, they either completely failed to get to any search engine or ended up running their query on a different search engine -- usually whatever type-in field happened to be at h&. If you're looking … [Read more...]

Find Health Answers at Your Fingertips

Have you ever gone to an internet search engine website like Google to look up information on health? A survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 61 percent of adults say they look online for health information. There’s a new term for this: e-patients. E- patients take internet searches a step further. Not only do they occasionally conduct internet searches about health; but they become involved in online groups & organizations dedicated to a particular aspect of their health. The upside? We can find people out there who know what we are going through. We can become involved in discussions with other patients like ourselves who have experienced the same side effects, the same pain, & most importantly, some of the … [Read more...]

Flu Trends by Google

While some of us want to know what the latest news is on "flu trends" others of us are "sick" of hearing about it. If you do want to know what is going on around the world or in your neighborhood regarding the flu, you may be interested in Google Flu Trends. (Is there anything Google isn't working on these days?) It uses “aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity” in a certain country. This application has an interactive map that, when you put your curser over the screen shot of the map, you can see what "flu intensity" is for the country from ‘Low’ to ‘High’. Many countries are not currently on the map, but you can find results for North America & continental Europe where flu trends (especially with Swine … [Read more...]

Looking for a Statistic?

All things Google eventually seem to become successful, so while this site Google Internet Stats is in the beginning stages, we see it's potential. You can put in a keyword & find all kinds of statistics. The site just recently was started & is in Beta mode. When I put "illness" in the search category, nothing came up, which means we need to head on over there & "submit a stat." If you want to help, you can find loads of illness statistics & their sources at or National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week web site or Lisa's blog Chronic Illness Support. … [Read more...]

Organizing Your To-Do List

If you are like me you have a million things you need to do-- personal, work, kids, & the medical to-do list alone can be overwhelming! I have lists of lists, post-it notes, dry erase boards, & more. If you're looking to get more organized, you may want to check out this list of 10 Excellent Options for Managing To-Do Lists Online. I read through the list & am trying out Toodledo. I liked the ring of it, but also the description, including the ability to print out pocket sized booklets of your list. There is a free version, but if for any reason I need more bells & whistle's it's just $14.95 a year. I likely use that in dry erase pens & paper for lists in a year. I'll keep you posted. Have you tried any of these? Are you a digital … [Read more...]
