Devotion: Avoiding Losing Ourselves To The Hardship In Our Lives During Illness

30-avoid-losing-self

"He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship." (Lamentations 3:4-6) It is not easy to live with hardship, and to suffer enduring pain. We can lose ourselves in the hardships that come into our lives. Not long ago I was talking to someone who told me about a member of his family that was so caught up in a disappointing event that the person had a mental breakdown over it. We can let our hardships become so all-encompassing that it is difficult to see beyond them, even single events in our lives can swallow up the good things, the many wonderful events, that God would have us focus upon instead. I think that for those of us who suffer, and have suffered much difficulty in life, if we were to balance everything … [Read more...]

Devotion: Are You Listening to God as Much as You are Talking to Him About Your Illness?

16-listening

"I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak," (Psalm 38:13) My mother lives two states away, and neither of us are much able to travel and see each other, so we talk to each other on the phone. From time to time my mother has issues either with her computer or her television set, and calls me with questions. Often she is so busy asking me questions about the problem that she doesn't take time to listen to what I'm saying. I will tell her: "Mom, you can't listen if you are talking." I sometimes wonder if God would say the same thing to us? We can get so busy in our lives that we do not take time to listen to God, to read His word, to speak, and then be silent in prayer before Him. We can get so caught up in … [Read more...]

Devotion: There Is More To The Picture–Especially When Ill

3-more-to-the-picture-than-meets-the-eye

"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." (1 Corinthians 13:12) "There is more to the picture than meets the eye." I love that saying. There is so much truth in it. We often see difficult circumstances through a narrow lens that doesn't let in all the light or the complete image. We often have tunnel vision that robs us of the entire picture that surrounds us. When I think of suffering, pain, tragedy and loss, I try to remind myself that what I can understand is entirely limited by the mere fact of my humanity. I'm not God, I don't know all, cannot see all, cannot understand all that is involved in every situation, but … [Read more...]

Devotion: When You Cannot Meet Everyone’s Expectations of You

28-expectations

"When she saw her hope unfulfilled, her expectation gone, she took another of her cubs and made him a strong lion." (Ezekiel 19:5) In the expectations game everyone loses when it comes to living with an illness. We can become discouraged and depressed when we find our hopes dashed, when we have a few "good days" and expect them to last, only to be knocked flat again by affliction a short time later. Expectations can create all sorts of problems between spouses and friends and family. We say we will do something, or make plans ahead of time to go to some event, only to have our hopes dashed and the injury multiplied by disappointing those close to us. And the situation is not improved by those who have little understanding or … [Read more...]

Devotion: When Healthy People Envy Our Unwanted “Benefits” Of Illness

28-bed

"The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed." (Isaiah 50:4) One of the strange and paradoxical things about illness is how it can bring out jealousy and envy in others. It is more than I can wrap my mind around that there are those who appear to be jealous and envious of our illnesses. Perhaps some people enjoy getting a lot of attention, or are starved for attention, and they see everything with that mindset. I would be happy to be rid of my illnesses and am willing to give them to anyone who wants them. I don't need or want the attention. Then there are those days when we are doing a bit … [Read more...]

Devotion: The Trails of Our Lives: Illness Takes Us On a Winding Path

25-trail

“In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths." (Judges 5:5-7) The Appalachian Trail is approximately 2,184 miles long. It runs from Springer Mountain Georgia to Mount Katahdin Maine. It spans fourteen states. Thousands of people walk this challenging trail every year, children, people in their 80s, and even a blind person with their seeing eye dog has walked this difficult trail. What would make anyone want to spend months walking across and through mountains in the heat, cold, wind, and rain? Why does anyone want to test themselves in such a way? Of course there is beauty and lovely wildlife on the trail, the interesting people you would meet, and the … [Read more...]

Devotion: What Happens When You Are Diagnosed with a Secondary Illness (or Third, Fourth…)?

3-16-what-happens

"Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses." (1 Timothy 5:23) During a recent doctor visit I told my doctor: “I don't need another problem.” He replied: “I know.” Additional illnesses and extra diagnoses are things we do not want. If you are like me, you really just want the affliction merry-go-round to stop. I'm guessing that you feel exactly the same as I do when additional illnesses are added to the scale of your already overburdened affliction account. My “extra” illness is diabetes. I've been non-diabetic, pre-diabetic, and now am diagnosed diabetic. I have packet to carry around to check my blood with, and an additional medication, and one more thing to … [Read more...]

Devotion: Giving And Receiving Comfort During Pains of Illness

26-giving

"My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life." (Psalm 119:50) How encouraging it is to have doctors and nurses that understand and practice comforting words to their patients. But how terrible it is to look for comfort from such people and only get cold words or indifference. So it is it with any situation that hungers for comfort. God brings us comfort in many ways. Sometimes He uses certain people, or events, or changes in circumstances to encourage us. At other times it is simply a feeling in our spirit that God is with us, perhaps His Holy Spirit whispering into our heart that everything will work out fine. I think that there are times we are so busy or preoccupied that we really don't give much thought … [Read more...]

Devotion: Understanding The Valley Of Depression When Coping with Chronic Illness

21-depression

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4) For most people suffering chronic health problems depression is no stranger. Many illnesses bring with them secondary depression. This affliction is not something people are comfortable talking about. We admire those who go through life with a cheerful disposition, and positive thinking is almost a religion. Being depressed is unacceptable and something to be avoided at all costs, but what if it can’t be avoided? I have gone through many periods of very dark depression. I’m not talking about a “blue mood” or a bit of melancholy, but about walking around with your head inside a very … [Read more...]

A Letter to One Afflicted With Illness (From One Who is Also Afflicted)

karlton-letter-to-friend

Karlton Douglas, one of our regular devotional writers, had someone who has recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness write to him asking for advice in a few areas. Karlton wrote him back and then sent a copy of the letter to us to see if we would be interested in reprinting it here at Rest Ministries. I hope you will read it and comment below on what you agree with, disagree with, your experience and more. What advice would you give someone who has just been diagnosed with an illness that may last his or her lifetime? A Letter to One Afflicted With Illness (From One Who is Also Afflicted) I think most of my life with illness I have felt it is a battle the Lord and I have fought alone. Beyond praying with me and a bit of … [Read more...]

Devotion: Life Is Too Short To Waste It, Especially When Chronically Ill

16-tomorrow

"Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." (James 4:14) Those with afflictions can get into the habit of putting their lives on hold, waiting for a “better” day, a day where the thorn does not hurt so much, a day when they are feeling better before doing the things they want to do. I will never forget the time we were visiting some relatives in the mountains of east Tennessee. We came across two houses side by side. One house was brand new, new paint, brightly colored, sparkling windows--a picture perfect house. The other house was a rundown tar-paper shack with rotting wood, it hardly looked livable. Yet my relatives told me that … [Read more...]

Devotion: When Your Illness Makes You Feel Betrayed By Your Body

reflect

"My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak." (Psalm 31:10) Do you ever feel that your body has betrayed you? Has it left you feeling embarrassed, disappointed, or discouraged? There are times our body feels more like an enemy than a friend, times when no matter what we do, no matter what treatments or medications we give it, it responds by letting us down. Sometimes it seems like we are in an endless battle with our bodies, we think we have gained some ground, that we have turned the tide in the war, and yet it rallies against us and sets us back once more. It can get discouraging after awhile. The truth is that our bodies are not our enemies. Our … [Read more...]
