How to Deal With Grief In a Walk In Closet of Emotions

HOW TO DEAL WITH GRIEF (and old shoes!) I love this article, poetic even. Lisa describes how her "trip" into a walk in closet brought back a lot of bittersweet memories about her life before rheumatoid arthritis. Touching and sweet, and oh so familiar!

Have you ever seen a glimpse into your old life--before illness? It can be hard to know how to deal with grief that we are hit with by something as simple as clothes or shoes we find in a walk in closet. By Lisa Copen A walk in closet I have not walked into for . . . years. My husband uses most of it, but my clothes--in about 10 different sizes--sit on the bars. The wire baskets hold old t-shirts. An Old Navy shirt, size small, mocks me with the year 2004 on it. The day previously I started throwing them into bags. I have become sick of the clutter all over my house and have been purging for months. But this closet has overwhelmed me. I had no plans to take care of the closet this weekend. . . and I have discovered that this works … [Read more...]

Devotion: The Tiny “Seeds” of My Life

mustard-seed

"It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in it's shade." (Mark 4:31-32) I planted these tiny seeds in my garden. The Lord supplied me with the soil, nutrients, water, and sunshine. With time and patience, lovely plants soon came from the ground, ready for harvest. Though I love to garden, my garden is quite tiny because my illness keeps me from doing too much. Some days I feel like those tiny seeds. I am so weak and feeble. I feel like I don't have much to offer. The pain is so consuming that I am not physically able to do a whole lot. I wonder; "I am just a weak … [Read more...]

Devotion: As Long As I See The Light I Long For While Facing Illness Each Day

dafodils

"The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1) The sky is overcast as I type this. It's cold outside. And that pretty much describes how I've been feeling for two days. Yesterday I had several periods of sobbing. "I can't keep doing this Lord," I cried. "I'm tired of pushing myself to get the most basic things done. Tired of dealing with a mind that works so hard to focus on the task at hand. Tired of interruptions to care for physical challenges. I need a rest, some solitude, some time to unwind, to have my mind and heart renewed by You." I think back a couple of weeks. One morning, when the cheery daffodils my husband gave me for … [Read more...]

Devotion: Hug Something!

teddy

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” (Deuteronomy 33:27) During a time recently where everything in my life looked pretty bleak – I was reminded of something someone did for me many years ago. This lady had been treating me regularly for some time and one day when I arrived in the waiting room for my appointment, there was a huge teddy bear sitting in one of the chairs. She was aware that at that time, I was not only in severe physical pain; I was also distraught from a bad reaction to some medication and feeling let down by some poor care from a medical professional. I was really in a bad way – both physically and emotionally. She came out to the waiting room to meet me and pointed … [Read more...]

How Can I Get Kids Out The Door To School When I Can Barely Move?

kid-alarm-clock

My husband used to take care of the kids in the mornings because I have a hard time with mornings. But he works the third shift now and I now have two children in school. I have to wake up at 6:30 after little or no sleep and have the kids on the bus by 7:30 a.m. It is becoming increasingly difficult and I keep waking up later and later. This makes it harder because then I have to get them both ready in less time. Sometimes they balk. One is an occasional bed wetter, which makes it worse each morning. So far I have managed to get them to the bus each morning on time. But, I know it is just a matter of time that they miss the bus on my account. I really need prayers. Karlynné Hi, Karlynné, First I have to confess that my husband … [Read more...]

Vanity or Understandable Self-Esteem and Body Image Issues When Chronically Ill?

womans-50s

By Lisa Copen Who out there has something they would like to conceal? Highlight? Tone? We are in a constant battle with ourselves as we look at the magazines and then read 1 Samuel 16:7 – “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Obviously, we can put too much “weight” (the irony, huh?) on trying to look gorgeous and constantly feel like we don’t measure up. But is it a bad thing to want to go get a little trim on our hair or wash some of that gray out so at least part of our body doesn’t feel older than it is? No, I don’t think so. Remember, our body is God’s temple. Surely He understands if our temple needs a little dusting or fresh … [Read more...]
