Devotion: We Have Been Give Just Enough Energy For What God Desires Us to Do

13-eagle

“You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself.” (Exodus 19:4) When I came out of hospital early this year, I had little energy and motivation to do much. When I woke in the morning, sometimes after very little sleep, it seemed that it was just too hard to get up out of bed. Contemplating what I had to do, or even what I hoped to accomplish in the day, seemed overwhelming. In church one morning I was struck by the words of the song Eagles Wings* that seemed to relate so well to where I was at, just then. It talks about us being raised up on eagles wings--the power of the Spirit that helps us when we can’t do it alone. I’ve always loved the picture of an eagle, … [Read more...]

Devotion: Every Word, Thought, And Act, Be Love–Even When Living with Daily Pain

11-act-of-love

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29) In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians he gives us the above advice--words we’ve no doubt heard many times before. When I read these instructions again recently, I was in a pretty bad place. Emotionally I was really struggling and I knew that because I was finding it hard to just make it through each day, I was less tolerant of other people around me and quicker to be critical, or thoughtless in my responses to them. I guess you could say that this verse really hit home. I know that I can be hard to be around when I go through those times … [Read more...]

smileb

Is your support group getting a bit depressing? If so, it is time for some icebreaker ideas to bring the joy back (before it's too late!) If you live with a chronic illness or chronic pain, the odds are that you have at least tried a support group once since your diagnosis. Did the situation go something like this? You felt awful the entire day but you decided to get in the car and go to the support group anyway. You thought it would be good for you. It took forever to find the building at the hospital and then you ended up parking what seemed like a mile from the suite number. You found a chair that smelled like old sweat and smoke and hoped somehow you would find some encouragement. But an hour later you're ready to make dash for … [Read more...]

When You Are Ill and Part of Our Military Family

erin-wang

November is National Military Family Appreciation Month and where do we even begin? Not only do these families sacrifice their time together, but they but they put their lives on the line, move their families all over the world continuously, and live on a very limited income. This life can be hard for many of us to imagine if we are healthy, but consider those moms and dads who are chronically ill; those who face the daily pain and physical limitations at we face living with illness, yet they also have a spouse who may not even be home for months at a time. Wednesday Jocelyn Green, author of Faith Deployed will share a story with us from her book about a chronically ill mom and wife who is in a military family. The article, "Worn Out … [Read more...]

Q & A: I Don’t Seem To Fit In To Online Support Groups!

annoyed-woman

Sometimes I feel very left out in the online support groups. I live with an incredible amount of daily pain and I just need someone who cares. It seems like everyone else in the group have people who support them and write them back. But when I share something from my heart all I get is a bunch of well-meaning advice. I don't need advice! Or . . . no one responds at all. What I need is someone who will listen and try to understand. -Sandy Hi, Sandy, I can hear the pain in your words. I am going to assume since you wrote to me you are asking for some kind of advice, so here is my best 2-cents. Ask yourself, "What would the perfect response to my post be?" When we say we want people to "listen" and yet we are typing our posts out … [Read more...]

Devotion: Avoiding Feeling Overwhelmed By Keeping Our Focus on Just Today

07-avoiding-overwhelment

"Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." (James 4:14) Do you borrow trouble from tomorrow? Finding yourself loaded down with the cares of today? Do you still reach out and add stress to your life from tomorrow's cares? I think we all do. It is a bad habit, made all the worse by the fact that too often we are too weak to deal with today's challenges, much less wrestle with tomorrow's difficulties. The Stoic Philosophers have this thing called "Negative Visualization." The idea is to imagine the worst things that can happen to you or your family, then if they occur, you are better prepared for them. I can't go along with that idea. … [Read more...]

Devotion: Our Illness is Always in God’s Sight; He Doesn’t Just Deal With Leftovers

road-sign-confusion

"This is My doing." (1 Kings 12:24) The struggles of life come in many forms, whether it be a prodigal child, unemployment, illness, or the loss of a loved one. We all suffer because we live in a world that is tarnished with sin. There are many hot-fueled emotions, however, about whether God causes this pain or if He simply allows it to touch our lives. 1 Kings 12:24 says, “This is my doing." We all long to believe in a God who comforts us and has a lap we can curl up into. We do not always want to think of God as a Father who must also use discipline, even when it is painful. As parents, however, discipline is not punishment. It is a tool to raise our children to be more Christ-like, just as God desires us to be. Coping with … [Read more...]

Devotion: Does Your Heart Hurt?

868448887_db19f27092_m

“Cast all your anxieties upon Him because He cares for you.” (I Peter 5:7) One day I dug a little hole, And put my hurt inside. I thought that I could just forget, I’d put it there to hide. But that little hurt began to grow, I covered it every day. I couldn’t leave it and go on, It seemed the price I had to pay. My joy was gone, my heart was sad, Pain was all I knew. My wounded soul enveloped me, Loving seemed too hard to do. One day, while standing by my hole, I cried to God above. And said, “If You are really there – They say, You’re a God of Love!” And just like that He was right there, And just put His arms around me. He wiped my tears, His hurting child, There was no safer place to … [Read more...]
