Devotion: When Loneliness Kicks In, God Will Sustain You

29-textmsg

“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me” (Psalm 3:5). As a single person who’s chronically ill, I’ve gone through many medical tests and procedures by myself. Occasionally, my friend or my sister goes with me, but many visits I go in alone and I come out alone. Experiencing such loneliness at a time of unknown is disheartening to say the least. Recently, I underwent a new treatment and as I was heading in to the doctor’s office, I received two text messages and an email on my phone letting me know I was prayed for and thought of (BIG thank you to my two friends Karen, Kim, and sister Gretchen). That meant the world to me. But more importantly, they reminded me that I wasn’t alone because God was … [Read more...]

Devotion: God Collects Your Every Tear Through the Pain

18-collect-tears

“Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll--are they not in your record?” (Psalm 56:8) I love watching someone’s tears being wiped away by a loving parent, relative, or friend. That interaction is so precious. Maybe it’s seeing the concern and care taken to collect each and every tear. Maybe it’s knowing someone else cares so much about you they will gladly wipe away your tears that stirs my heart. Whatever the reason, it’s an emotional scene for sure. For those of us going through hard situations, tough physical challenges or tight finances, tears can be a regular occurrence. When I read this passage, the tenderness expressed by David here made me shed some tears. Several other versions say it this way, “You … [Read more...]

Devotion: How God Can Use Your Affliction to Bring You Closer to Him

22-good-to-be-afflicated

"It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold” (Psalm 119:71-72). From my journal during a recent health battle I wrote the following. . . The nausea and back pain are getting worse. All I want to do is sit by my fireplace, put some heat on my back and open the Word. I love how the Word instantly calms my anxiousness and restores my inner peace. Why is it then that I only seem to read my Bible and pray when I’m sick, tired, or frustrated? Dear God, I know how important it is for me to spend time with You daily, but yet I do not do it. I know that when I do make my quiet time with You a priority my day starts off … [Read more...]

Devotion: Looking Past Our Illness to See God Working in Our Lives

26-bless

“The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast desert. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything” (Deuteronomy 2:7). "Sleep, riches, health, and every other blessing are not truly and fully appreciated until they have been interrupted." When I read this quote by Jean Paul Richter I laughingly thought, “Exactly! It’s just too bad that my ‘blessings’ have been interrupted for quite a while!” It’s so hard to see our blessings when we’re in the midst of a hardship. When I came across Deuteronomy 2:7, I literally stopped in my tracks and with tears in my eyes asked God to forgive me for doubting His … [Read more...]

Devotion: Oh No! Another New Year!

01-03-ohno

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. . . Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but is the Lord’s purpose that prevails,” (Proverbs 16:9, 19:21). I can’t believe another year has gone by! I keep saying this over and over lately. There are so many things I wanted to get done this year. For me the New Year is a little depressing because I broken all the goals I’d made last year and I didn’t check too much off my to-do list! It’s especially hard for me to plan things in detail because I’m chronically ill and I have a long commute to work. I just can’t plan anything because I don’t know what tomorrow will be like for me, and it’s hard. The good news is, it’s actually better if … [Read more...]

What She Learned Lying Down, Angela Dugi Shares Her Reflections

hummingbird

Bridget Gazlay Through my conversations with Angela Dugi, author of What I Learned Lying Down: Hope for the Chronically Ill, I saw that God did indeed meet her needs during her times of devastation. She struggles with chronic fatigue, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and asthma, and yet God has provided for her in miraculous ways. God has used her illnesses to teach her five life lessons: First, we must gain an eternal perspective "God used my weekly trips to the cancer center to teach me that, and much more." Because she is chronically ill, she could empathize with others who were hurting. She knows firsthand (after fourteen years) how encouraging words helped her to survive when she thought she could not … [Read more...]

Interview with Angela Dugi, Author of “What I Learned Lying Down: Hope for the Chronically Ill”

angela-dugi

Bridget Gazlay Even though I've known Angela Dugi for only a short while, I have come to think of Angie as a dear friend and soul mate as we both travel on the road of chronic illness. I watched her struggle just to have the energy and focus to answer my questions. Every second is precious to her because she doesn't know how long that second will last before she needs to rest. Her book, What I Learned Lying Down: Hope for the Chronically Ill gives an intimate look into her private journal as she shares how God used her illnesses for good during this fourteen-year pilgrimage. Living with chronic fatigue, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and asthma--all while being a wife and mom to three children--is … [Read more...]

Devotion: When You are Tempted to Worry, Focus on the Lord Instead!

pray-with-friend

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41-42). "I really don't have the money to go to another doctor appointment. I have enough bills as it is." My thoughts that day kept going. Before I knew it I was thinking about my car and started imagining that it would be taken from me since I paid a month late. Then I started wondering if I would lose my house too someday. All because I had to pay for another doctor appointment copay! Wow, did that get out of hand. In no way did my thoughts help my feelings of unease. On my way in to work, I heard a speaker talking about the Mary and Martha … [Read more...]

Part 3 of 3: What Can We Learn From Job?

learn-from-job

Can We Believe in a God Who Allows Suffering? Part 3 of 3: What Can We Learn From Job? By Bridget Gazlay This is a 3-part article series. Part 1: Reflections On Job Part 2: When We Question God Yesterday's article was about how we naturally question God, but we need to always remember that God is in control of all of our circumstances and situations and has our best interest at heart at all times. Today, we will look at what we can learn from Job's story? How can we apply this to our own suffering? Your situation might not be directly caused by sin (although there certainly could be consequences of sin). God is with you and sees everything you are going through, and even allows it. We don't like to think that God … [Read more...]

Finding New Hobbies and Joys Within The Midst of Pain

By Bridget Gazlay You would think being chronically ill, a full-time administrative assistant, and a devotional writer would be enough to keep my time occupied. I also have the great joy of being a fabric artist. Now that title alone doesn't really tell you what I do. I don't design fabric or make clothing. I draw a design and then I make it in fabric, creating my own fabric art scene. I then scan my fabric original to produce my own prints, bookmarks, and note cards. That way I can spend as long as I need to on each design - which could be anywhere from 4 to 20 hours - and not have to make hundreds of them. I started making fabric pictures in 2000 when I was a missionary. I was a quilter at the time and wondered if I could figure out … [Read more...]

Devotion: Is God Enough, Even When Our Prayers Are Not Answered The Way We’d Hoped?

06-is-god-enough

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for." (Hebrews 11:1-2) "Do you still have faith when things don't go your way?" When our guest speaker asked us this I had to admit I sometimes wonder what God is doing and whether He heard me or not! I have things I want to take place. I have my own idea of how God should work in my life. I don't necessarily want to think about the "what if's". This speaker certainly had to think about the "what if's" though as his grown daughter battled a brain tumor and one of his grand-children battled cancer. He prayed for his daughter's healing every day and I believe he had enough faith for it to happen. But he also believed … [Read more...]

What Adventures Has Your Illness Brought To You? (Other Than Familiarity With Medical Stuff!)

dream-girl-flower

Bridget Gazlay recently started writing a monthly column for her community newspaper and she is able and eager to share it with us too. So often we only see the losses that can accompany our diagnosis of a disease, but just as Bridget shares, you never know the possibilities God has in store for you, even within the illness itself. Lisa By Bridget Gazlay According to Gallup's daily poll of 1500 Americans, 54% felt our economic outlook is getting worse (February 2, 2011). There is no doubt about it; these days are hard. And being that I am a young single person it's even tougher - especially since I am also chronically ill. My life has many ups and many downs, but my life is never dull, that's for sure. I am also an Administrative … [Read more...]
