Devotion: The Words of My Heart When Coping With Pain

3-31-words

"A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (Luke 6:45) "You are being so selfish! Can you think of someone other than yourself?" "Why doesn't anyone else seem to care that our house is trashed? If everyone would just pick up their own stuff I wouldn't be so tired all the time!" "Stop making that screeching sounds! and turn down the video game! And pick up your dishes and take them to the kitchen." Uh. . . Yeah. Those are my words. Not very polite, are they? I said them politely the first five times, but then I started to seethe and said nothing, and then, as I couldn't walk through my … [Read more...]

Devotion: Seeking the Sunshine Daily While Coping With Chronic Illness

20-flower

“Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always” (Psalm 105:4). I love gardening, and although I am limited in what I can physically do, I greatly miss my flowers during the winter months, so for Christmas a friend gave me an amaryllis plant to grow. I appreciated it but had difficulty in deciding where to put it since direct sunlight is filtered through the large trees in our yard. I finally decided to place it in front of the sliding door in our dining room each morning and move it out of the way each night. I wasn’t sure if it would grow, but I am thrilled that the plant is now much higher than my hopes and ready to bloom! As I happily watch my plant’s progress, I am reminded of how much I need not only the earthly … [Read more...]

Devotion: We Need The Word Of The Lord, Especially When In Pain

19-word-of-god

"'As for Me, this is My covenant with them,' says the Lord. 'My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants--from this time on and forever,' says the Lord." (Isaiah 59:20-21) We need God’s word, especially those of us with afflictions and disabilities. I know, it can be daunting to pick up that big book called The Bible, particularly when you are ill. I have sometimes found myself letting God’s word slip away from me. There are days when I’m too tired to do anything, including reading the Bible. But those of us with disabilities need to read God’s Word as much, if not more, than those … [Read more...]

Devotion: Splashes of The Word May Still Leave Us Dry

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5) “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. (John 15:1) We have a long 5-foot high shrub that separates our front yard from the neighbors yard. The shrub is made up of many individual plants and the one on the end has consistently been getting browner. It is on the end of the row of shrubs, most exposed to the sunlight, kids with baseball bats, and dogs who fertilize it on a regular basis. At first, we tried giving it more water but still it grows brown and crispy. The leaves are dried up and falling off, it appears dead. So when the gardener came last week I asked him about it. I … [Read more...]

Devotion: When We Are Suffering The Only Power Behind a Positive Thought is Jesus

lion

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14) According to the Collins English Dictionary, darkness means, “the absence of light.” The definition doesn’t say anything about darkness being its own entity, but rather the absence of something else – light. I always found that interesting because you can either have light or you don’t have light – you can’t have it both ways at the same time. That same principle is true in regards to our thoughts – you can either think positive, uplifting thoughts or you can think negative, dreary thoughts. You can’t be doing both at the same time. “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. … [Read more...]

About the Founders of Today’s Promise

Pat & Nancy Dittert have been involved with Rest Ministries as part of our devotional program. Each morning Pat would send out a "Today's Promise" as we sent out our daily devotional. Since moving the devotionals over to the Rest Ministries website, we may not be sending them out to you personally, but Pat has started his own group over at Yahoo Groups where you can still receive a scripture called "Today's Promise" each day. I asked them to share a little bit about themselves & their ministry. Below is my interview with them. Tell me about your ministry: Our ministry has been one of compassion & of sharing God's love to those hurting emotionally & physically. Part of our work has been counseling & helping people to love … [Read more...]
