“Thou hast exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.” (Psalm 92:10, NASB)
A new year brings new hopes, dreams, & resolutions to many people. Living with ongoing health issues however, I can experience a sense of hopelessness & even dread at the thought of more possible pain & suffering. After underst&ing the symbolism of being anointed with oil, this verse has become quite meaningful & encouraging to me.
Oil was used to anoint those consecrated for special service. We are created for God’s service here, regardless of our limitations. He consecrates & enables each of us for the purposes that He has chosen.
Oil was a symbol of gladness, spiritual comfort, & nourishment. Many times we need comfort when we are discouraged & gladness when we are downtrodden. Pain & suffering can be draining physically, mentally, & emotionally. We are in constant need of God’s spiritual nourishment to keep us going in life.
Oil was used as a salve for wounds, & as a source of refreshment. There are times when we all feel bruised & wounded by our ongoing struggles. God’s refreshment is the salve we need to heal our hurts & protect us from bitterness & despair.
Although this verse can be meditated on in a symbolic way, I felt the need of a visual representation as well. Each morning, I take a moment to thank God for his anointing & rub a small amount of oil on my neck & shoulders. I praise Him for the fact that no matter how much weariness or pain I am experiencing, He anoints me each new day with the grace, strength, & sustenance I need to carry on.
As the new year begins, we can rest in knowing that God’s love & mercy have sustained us in the past, & will continue to do so in the days & months ahead.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us look to this new year with hope, for You have given us the oil of joy for mourning & a garment of praise for a spirit of heaviness. Your mercies are new every morning & great is Your faithfulness. Amen.
